History of the Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission
The Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission (KCBC) was created by ordinance in December 1986. In January 1988, KCBC was certified as an affiliate program of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. and has maintained this certification to date. The Commission is directed by a volunteer Board of citizens appointed by Columbus Council. The Board works with a staff of one full-time Executive Director and one part-time employee that are employees of Columbus Consolidated Government Public Works.. KCBC’s mission is to engage and educate individuals to take greater responsibility for enhancing beautification, protecting the environment and eliminating litter and blight. The Commission’s programs and projects are designed to support improved waste management techniques and enhanced community aesthetics.
Since its inception, the Commission has implemented a number of successful programs and projects related to the improvement of waste management techniques which include: providing technical assistance in preparing the city’s 20-year waste management plan, promote curbside and business recycling, Christmas tree recycling, household hazardous waste / electronic recycling, Shoe Recycling, Magic of recycling, grease & prescription/over the counter drug(s) collection, I-185 Scenic Byways, establishment of CCG Environmental Court, Tour of Gardens and annual Arbor Day Celebration. In addition, the Commission annually sponsors numerous educational programs for schools, businesses and educators to promote recycling and good environmental stewardship.
The Commission has also been a leading influence in the area of community aesthetics with its first major beautification enhancement project “Adopt-A-Spot”, initiated in 1988 in partnership with the Columbus Bank and Trust Company (now known as Synovus). The Commission works with the Concerned Citizens of South Columbus (CCSC), Citizens Against Drugs (CAD) and the Columbus Police Department to promote neighborhood litter prevention programs and sponsors the community-wide annual Help-the-Hooch River Cleanup, another program that highlights litter prevention.
In 1991, the Commission partnered with other community organizations to form Columbus Gateways. John Flournoy, Chairperson of the Gateways Foundation, Inc. serves as an Ex-Officio Board Commissioner, which creates a stronger working relationship between the two entities. In 1997, the Commission assumed a key leadership role, working with the Mayor and the City Manager in planning and implementing the Community Improvement Program. The Commission also supports the city’s Urban Forestry and Beautification Division by assisting in the coordination of the required annual Arbor Day Celebration which enables Columbus to maintain its “Tree City USA” designation. It is important to note that Columbus was the first city in the State of Georgia to earn this designation. The Commission was also heavily involved in the successful implementation of America Heritage River Initiative, the proposed River Alliance organization, the Empowerment Zone, and the Comprehensive plan for Columbus and Uptown Columbus.
