The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus is the oldest legislative Black caucus in the nation, leading the fight for justice, equity, and opportunity by championing policies that uplift Black Ohioans and strengthen communities across our state. Since 1967 the members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus have been on the front-lines, fully committed to fighting for issues important to African Americans in Ohio. The caucus is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system, ensuring the fundamental right to vote is not infringed upon, securing a fair playing field for African Americans seeking good-paying jobs, addressing health disparities and strengthening the education system to help ensure a bright future for the next generation of African American/ black leaders here in Ohio. Furthermore, we strive to always be a voice and conscious in the legislature not just for Black Ohioans but all minorities in Ohio, while cultivating a culture that will create strong leadership in the black community and all Ohio in the years to come.

Canton showed UP! 🔥🗳️

More than 125 volunteers joined OLBC to knock doors, talk to voters, and build the people centered power we need heading into Election Day!

Special shoutout to America’s favorite Governor, Wes Moore, for bringing the energy to Canton, and to OLBC President Terrence Upchurch, Rep. Veronica Sims, and Rep. Darnell Brewer for showing up and putting in the work alongside us.

Thank you to every volunteer who gave us their time, energy, and Sunday to help elect Thomas West to the State Senate District 29, Krista Allison to the Ohio House District 49, Amy Acton as Ohio’s Governor, and reelect Congresswoman Emilia Sykes for Congressional District 13! ✊🏾🗣️

There’s nothing like Homecoming at Central State! 💛❤️

OLBC was proud to celebrate with the Marauder family and show our continued support for Central State University, Ohio’s only public Historically Black University. For members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, uplifting Central State is especially important because we understand the critical role HBCUs play in educating, developing, and preparing the next generation of Black leaders.

A special thank you to the Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for welcoming OLBC and hosting us in this year’s Homecoming Parade! 🤙🏾

It was also great to have Joyce Beatty welcome us to her Alma mater with Dr. Amy Acton, Sherrod Brown, Annette Blackwell For Auditor, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore alongside us!

Homecoming is about more than coming back. It’s about honoring our history, investing in the institutions that have invested in us, and making sure they remain strong for generations to come.

Ohioans often hear only about the final vote a member of OLBC or the General Assembly takes. But there’s so much more that happens before that vote!

It’s time to get y’all more involved in your state government—and that starts with the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus bringing you inside the process.

Every bill that becomes law starts its journey through the legislative process, including committee hearings where lawmakers have the opportunity to ask questions, hear testimony and examine what a bill would actually do.

Watch OLBC member Senator Willis Blackshear (Dayton) ask the bill’s sponsors the important questions about the Gas Tax Holiday which was passed yesterday. This is part of how OLBC members work for you by paying attention and asking the questions our communities deserve answers to.

Ohioans deserve relief at the pump — and at the grocery store, on utility bills, in housing, childcare and healthcare.

For OLBC members, a temporary 90-day gas tax holiday simply did not go far enough. Ohio has the resources to think bigger and deliver lasting relief for working families.

We’re hitting the doors in support of OLBC-endorsed candidates Annette Blackwell, Daquan Neal, and additional candidates across the region while talking directly with voters and making sure our communities are ready for Election Day.

Elections are shaped by the people who show up, knock doors, have conversations, and make sure their neighbors are ready to vote.
