The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus is the oldest legislative Black caucus in the nation, leading the fight for justice, equity, and opportunity by championing policies that uplift Black Ohioans and strengthen communities across our state. Since 1967 the members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus have been on the front-lines, fully committed to fighting for issues important to African Americans in

Ohio. The caucus is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system, ensuring the fundamental right to vote is not infringed upon, securing a fair playing field for African Americans seeking good-paying jobs, addressing health disparities and strengthening the education system to help ensure a bright future for the next generation of African American/ black leaders here in Ohio. Furthermore, we strive to always be a voice and conscious in the legislature not just for Black Ohioans but all minorities in Ohio, while cultivating a culture that will create strong leadership in the black community and all Ohio in the years to come.

OLBC Condemns Tennessee GOP Power Grab

The Tennessee GOP’s decision to strip every Black member and Democrat of committee assignments is a blatant abuse of power and an attack on representative democracy.

As members of the oldest Black caucus in the nation, The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues in Tennessee and reject efforts to sideline their voices.

OLBC stands behind our endorsed candidate ✊🏾

The candidates endorsed by the OLBC represent a shared commitment to addressing the issues that shape everyday life for Ohio families, economic stability, access to quality healthcare, strong public education, and equal justice under the law. They are leaders who understand that policy must meet people where they are, and that government must work not for the few, but for all.

Primary Election Day is tomorrow, and your vote is a God given right and a hard fought freedom that generations fought to secure. 🗳️ The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus urges every eligible voter to honor that legacy by showing up and making your voice heard.

At a time when protections in the Voting Rights Act continue to be weakened, we cannot afford silence, apathy, or disengagement. Our communities cannot be ignored, pushed aside, or silenced when we stand together and vote.

Make a plan. Bring your family. Bring a friend. Go vote.

What does Louisiana v. Callais really mean?

It makes it harder to challenge discriminatory maps and easier to dilute Black voting power—plain and simple.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) is outraged and strongly condemns the decision in Louisiana v. Callais, yet another blow to the hard-fought protections that generations of Black Americans bled, marched, and organized to secure.

This isn’t just about Louisiana, it’s about the future of representation across this country and whether our communities will have a fair shot at being heard.

Stay informed. Stay engaged. Because what’s at stake is bigger than one case—it’s our power.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) mourns the passing of former State Representative Bill Patmon, a dedicated public servant and tireless advocate for his community.

Representative Patmon devoted his career to uplifting the people of Ohio, using his voice in the legislature to fight for fairness, opportunity, and justice. His commitment to community-centered leadership left a lasting impact both inside the Statehouse and throughout the neighborhoods he proudly served.

“Representative Patmon’s legacy is one of service, courage, and deep love for his community,” said Terrence Upchurch, President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus. “As someone who had the honor of succeeding him in the same House district, I stand on his shoulders. His work laid the foundation for the progress we continue to fight for today, and I am grateful for the path he cleared for leaders like myself.”

The OLBC extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Representative Patmon’s leadership and legacy. His contributions will not be forgotten, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. 🕊️❤️
