Some little things to celebrate

5 days until meteorological spring.

Here's what's already happening:

🌡️ THE LIGHT HAS CHANGED
We've gained over an hour of daylight since December 21st.
Birds notice. Their hormones are surging.
The dawn chorus is getting louder every day.

🐦 MIGRATION IS ACCELERATING
- Red-winged Blackbirds: HERE
- Killdeer: HERE
- Common Grackles: HERE
- American Robins: Flocks moving north
- Song Sparrows: Starting to sing

🦉 BABIES ARE BEING RAISED
- Great Horned Owl chicks: Just hatched
- Bald Eagle eggs: Incubating/hatching
- Squirrel babies: Emerging from nests

🦊 MAMMALS ARE PREGNANT
- Red Fox: 2 weeks until kits
- Raccoon: 6-7 weeks until babies
- Skunk: 8-9 weeks until kits

🌱 THE GROUND IS THAWING
- Earthworms rising
- Woodcocks can probe for food
- Early insects emerging on warm days

Spring doesn't arrive on a single day.
It's been building since late January.
March 1st is just when we officially acknowledge what nature already knows.
