Protecting waters in Ohio and beyond!

Thank you to the Ohio River Basin Alliance for inviting H2Ohio leadership to speak on a panel during their annual summit which draws participants from across the 14 states that encompass the Ohio River Basin. Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Brian Baldridge, Ohio EPA Director John Logue, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Assistant Director Steve Gray, and Ohio Lake Erie Commission Director Joy Mulinex joined together to talk about H2Ohio's framework, successes, and how the initiative is impacting the Ohio River Basin.

Celebrating the wonderful world of wetlands!

Today Governor Mike DeWine joined Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Mary Mertz and dozens of conservation partners to celebrate the accomplishments of the H2Ohio initiative.

Since 2019, H2Ohio has overseen the implementation of 529 wetland restoration projects resulting in more than 21,000 acres of restored wetlands and associated habitat thus far!

This was a great opportunity to recognize the more than 90 conservation partners who have played a role in the restoration, creation, and enhancement of wetlands across the state.

Governor DeWine continued the celebration this afternoon in - to highlight how the program's chloride reduction grants are helping to protect the land and 's waterways.

Since 2023, more than $7 million has been awarded to 128 communities for equipment and storage needs, helping to use less salt during Ohio's winter days!

Governor DeWine joined Ohio EPA, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, and about 250 students at Holy Family School in Cincinnati this morning to celebrate H2Ohio's work to improve water quality in Ohio.

Holy Family School is one of nearly 200 schools and daycares across the state where H2Ohio has removed lead service lines, helping to keep young people and their development a top priority.

H2Ohio and Ohio Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with the Village of Ottawa Hills, is celebrating the restoration of 23 acres of wetland habitat along the Ottawa River. This project slows and filters runoff before draining into the Ottawa River and ultimately Lake Erie. The project improves water quality by helping capture and filter stormwater, while also creating valuable habitat for native plants and wildlife.

The project also includes mowed trails connecting to an existing trail, creating new opportunities for the community to enjoy this restored natural space!

As a part of Governor Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, ODNR Director Mary Mertz joined local officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony that celebrated the completion of a new wetland system designed to improve water quality St. Marys, Ohio.

This project uses a series of interconnected wetland pools to trap sediment, reduce phosphorus and nitrogen, and hold stormwater before eventually flowing into the Maumee River and Lake Erie. Water-control structures help manage the amount of water entering the wetlands, while native vegetation provides wildlife habitat and helps stabilize the site.

Projects like this are helping make real, lasting changes that improve water quality, benefit native wildlife, and protect Ohio’s natural resources for generations to come!

Ohio is investing more than $1 million to help communities cut chloride pollution from road salt while keeping roads safe.

Ohio EPA's recent grants will fund 16 projects, helping municipalities upgrade equipment and improve salt storage to protect water quality.

Ohio is continuing its efforts to curb harmful algal blooms. Join the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, state partners, and Ohio Sea Grantfor an in‑person Domestic Action Plan Workshop on Thursday, Sept. 3 in Toledo.

Attendees will hear updates on agricultural nutrient source reductions and water management practices, explore targeted strategies and constructed projects within the H2Ohio wetland initiatives, learn about the new U.S. Domestic Action Plan, and review community-based approaches to improving water quality.
