Twenty-five years ago, our country experienced unprecedented tragedy. Today, and every day, we remember the sacrifices of the first responders who gave their all for their fellow man.

We remember the 343 firefighters who perished that day, the thousands of first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away, and the families who continue to grieve. The courage, sacrifice, and commitment of those brave men and women remind us that the fire service is bigger than just any one person. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 changed our country and our fire service forever.

In the days and weeks that followed, firefighters across South Carolina searched for a way to stand with a fire service community experiencing unimaginable loss. What followed was an extraordinary response from across our state: raising funds, donating a fire apparatus, and traveling to Ground Zero to support their brothers and sisters in New York.

Now, twenty-five years later, the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association shares this mini documentary to preserve the story of that response and remember why it mattered.

We remember those who were lost, honor those who answered the call, and remember a moment when the fire service, even in profound grief, stood together.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day. 💛

Firefighters and emergency responders face experiences most people never will. Knowing the warning signs, checking in on one another, and knowing where to turn for help can make a difference.

The NVFC’s Preventing and Coping with Su***de in the Emergency Services course helps responders recognize signs and symptoms that may precede su***de, understand resources available to those in need, and navigate the difficult healing process following a firefighter su***de.

In recognition of National Su***de Prevention Month, this on-demand course is free to all for a limited time. Consider adding it to your department’s September training schedule.
