Richland County's Community Planning and Development Department needs a community-minded Neighborhood Planner to focus on the holistic development and redevelopment of neighborhoods. This role will manage the Neighborhood Improvement Fund for use in community enrichment, help create master plans for County neighborhoods, and ensure planning efforts align with the County’s Comprehensive Plan.

A TREMENDOUS TENURE. Today, Richland County held a celebratory drop-in for Ruby Alston, a longtime custodian and custodial crew leader with the County who is retiring in August after more than 33 years of service!

Many residents and employees have become familiar with Ruby during her time serving the County Administration Building on Columbia's Hampton Street. She took great pride and demonstrated a commitment to excellence in maintaining a clean, safe and quality atmosphere for employees and visitors.

We honor Ruby Alston for her more than three decades of dependable, dedicated and distinguished service to Richland County Government. Congrats!👏

CONSIDERING YOUR THOUGHTS. Richland County Community Development seeks residents' feedback on the use of federal funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for community improvement, public services and affordable housing for fiscal year 2026. A public comment period runs from June 11 to July 10.

Community Development will present the County’s fiscal year 2026 Annual Action Plan at two public hearings, set for noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 1 in 2nd-floor Council Chambers at 2020 Hampton St., Columbia. Those attending the hearings can give feedback in person.

BACK TO SCHOOL. Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is hosting a back-to-school drive to gather school supplies for children in foster care. The drive offers multiple ways for residents and organizations to help children get ready for the upcoming school year, including:

• Bringing donated items to CASA’s headquarters in Room 407 of the County Judicial Center at 1701 Main St., Columbia
• Sponsoring children directly: $100 (covers supplies for five children), $250 (12 children), or $500 (25 children)
• Hosting a school supply drive with your work team, local nonprofit or community organization to gather items to donate

Let’s work together to give County children the gear to start the school year feeling eager, confident and ready to learn. The effort runs through July 4.
