STORYTELLING SUNDAY 💙
Elder abuse is a growing crisis in Missouri—and experts say what we're seeing may only be part of the story.
According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the state received and investigated 43,208 reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation involving seniors and adults with disabilities in 2025. That's roughly 118 reports every day and an increase of more than 1,300 reports from the previous year.
But experts believe elder abuse remains vastly underreported. For every case reported, an estimated 23 cases may go unreported.
Abuse can take many forms, including physical abuse, caregiver neglect, financial exploitation, and self-neglect. Warning signs may include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal from normal activities, anxiety about finances, or a lack of basic care and support.
One of the most concerning factors is isolation. Many older adults live alone, have limited social connections, or depend on family members and caregivers for daily needs. That isolation can make it harder for abuse or neglect to be recognized and reported.
Every Missourian deserves to age with dignity, safety, and respect. Awareness matters. Checking in on an older neighbor, friend, or family member can make a real difference.
If you suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a senior or adult with a disability, Missouri's Adult Abuse and Neglect Hotline is available at 1-800-392-0210.
