Some of our seniors visited the Refuge Center here in Columbia, and what an amazing experience it was! We were welcomed and guided by Ms. Laura Neitzey, who was kind enough to open the center specifically for our senior group. We are so thankful for her generosity, hospitality, and willingness to share her knowledge with us.

And we learned some things:

🤔 Did you know?

🐻 The refuge an incredible 110,000 acres of wildlife habitat—all managed by just two full-time employees and few volunteers!

🐻 One of the largest black bears recorded in the area weighed 860 pounds!

🐻 In 2013, approximately 15,000 bears were reported throughout the refuge area. Why so many bears? Because of natural resources, mama bears can have a more cubs.

It's amazing what we can discover right here in our own backyard. Sometimes we don't realize the beauty, history, and wildlife surrounding us until we take the time to explore our own community—and we're certainly glad we did!

We would also like to share that the Refuge Center is currently looking for volunteers. Whether you can give one day a month or even just an hour of your time, your help would be greatly appreciated.

For volunteer opportunities, please contact:

A heartfelt thank you again to Ms. Laura and the Refuge Center for making today so special. Our seniors truly enjoyed the experience, and we look forward to many more adventures discovering all the wonderful things Tyrrell County has to offer! ❤️

💜 Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. 💜

Today, we join communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse and promoting the dignity, safety, and well-being of older adults.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I forgot to remind our seniors on Friday to wear purple in honor of this important day. However, that did not stop us from showing our support! Some of our seniors proudly wore purple today, while others wore purple ribbons to help bring awareness to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Together, we can help create a community where every older adult is respected, valued, and protected.

Whew... today was definitely a hot one! ☀️🥵

Today, our seniors participated in an Elder Abuse Awareness Walk along the beautiful waterfront in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. We had a wonderful time, even with the temperatures!

A special thank you to Tonya for leading the way and taking such great care of our seniors while I held down the fort at the office (unfortunately I could not attend this year...hopefully next year, but I still rocked the shirt).

Take a look at some of the pictures from today's outing 😁

As a reminder, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about elder abuse and promoting elder justice around the world. 💜

If you have a purple shirt, we encourage you to wear it on June 15 in support of this important cause. We're hoping to gather our senior here at the Senior Center for a big group photo to show our support and spread awareness!

Until then, stay safe, stay hydrated, and stay as cool as possible in this summer heat! 💜☀️

✈️ Armchair Travel Adventures: Alaska Edition! 🏔️

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard Jetliner 1870 as we took off on our armchair travel adventure to the beautiful state of Alaska with our Administrative Assistant as our tour guide and Directors flight attendant (Add we still have our PTO 😁)!

Our travelers enjoyed breathtaking views of Alaska's majestic mountains, learned fascinating facts about the state, explored the world of dog sledding and Outhouse Racing, and admired the stunning scenery and natural wonders that make Alaska so special.

Of course, no trip would be complete without sampling a few local flavors! Our passengers enjoyed smoked salmon dip, fried cornbread, and "reindeer sausage" (also known as beef sausage).

One of the highlights of our journey was experiencing the magical beauty of the Northern Lights. Our seniors even created their own colorful Northern Lights masterpieces to take home!

This wonderful program gives our seniors the opportunity to explore new places without ever leaving the center, and we are incredibly grateful to Tonya for her time, creativity, and dedication in making this flight such a memorable experience.

So, where are we headed next? 🌎✈️ You'll just have to stay tuned! We can promise that our next destination will be just as exciting—and it may even include a special lunch along the way!
Until then, keep your boarding passes handy and your sense of adventure ready! 🧳✨

As we close out Olders American Month, we celebrate with a Health Day at the Tyrrell County Senior Adult Activity Center. We were blessed to have participants join us and take steps toward improving their health and well-being.

A special thank you and appreciation goes to Mrs. Samantha Combs, MDPP Lead Lifestyle Coach, Ms. Chelsea Combs, MDPP Lifestyle Coach, and Ms. Shakera Norfleet, Public Health Educator, Partnership for Success with the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health Department, Mrs. Annette Ward, Paramedic and Training Officer, and Ms. Dejiah Siler, Advanced EMT, with Martin-Tyrrell Ambulance Service, Mrs. Dee Furlough, Director of the Tyrrell County Cooperative Extension, for your support and willingness to be part of this special day.

What made today so meaningful was not the size of the crowd, but the spirit of fellowship, education, and community that filled the room. It was a simple, informal gathering, yet it was truly a blessing. I am beyond thankful for these incredible ladies who took time out of their schedules to invest in the health and wellness of our seniors and community members.

As we close out this first event, I am already speaking it into existence: one year from now, we will be celebrating our Second Annual Health Day with bigger, better, and reaching even more lives.

To everyone who attended, presented, supported, and encouraged us along the way—thank you. May God continue to bless each of you for the work you do and the difference you make in the lives of others. ❤️🙏🏾

Shenita.
