A timeless vision for the future of Forest Acres. 🌳✨
This morning, City Council reviewed updated renderings and design concepts for the future six-acre Mall Park and Amphitheater project: a space intentionally designed to feel authentic, welcoming, warm, historic, and built to stand the test of time.
Because Forest Acres does not have a large inventory of historic buildings or preserved architectural landmarks, city leaders see this project as a unique opportunity to intentionally create that sense of timeless character and identity through thoughtful design and placemaking.
“This is the kind of project that can define a community for generations,” said Mayor Thomas Andrews. “We have the opportunity to create something that feels timeless and authentic to Forest Acres.”
Inspired by the character of historic Southern gathering spaces and legacy downtowns, the park design incorporates weathered brick, iron detailing, bronze accents, layered landscaping, and classic architectural elements intended to create a rich, established feel from day one.
Council also reviewed updates to the amphitheater design, including a more traditional roof structure meant to better complement the park’s timeless aesthetic while giving the venue its own unique architectural identity.
“We want this park to feel timeless — like it has always been part of Forest Acres,” said Mayor Pro Tem Haskell Kibler. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create the kind of place and character communities are remembered for.”
The project is expected to go out for bid this fall, with construction anticipated to take approximately 12 to 18 months once underway.
City leaders will also begin exploring naming opportunities and philanthropic partnerships tied to the park and amphitheater. Officials said future naming and branding will help complement the already strong Forest Acres identity while creating a destination recognized throughout the Midlands and across South Carolina as the top city to call home 🏡
