Heartland Parkway project in Adair County to begin Monday, Oct. 19
$6.99 million project to include 2+1 passing lanes

SOMERSET, Ky. (Oct. 15, 2015) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to begin the first stages of work for the Heartland Parkway (KY 55) project in Adair County on Monday, Oct. 19.

The $6.99 million project will include 2+1 passing lanes from the Columbia Bypass (mile point 15) to the Adair/Taylor County line (mile point 22). A 2+1 road design has a continuous three-lane cross section with alternating passing lanes.

Work will begin with crews completing shoulder repairs and survey work during the remaining months of 2015 with minimal impact to traffic. Full construction operations are set to begin in early 2016.

When construction begins motorists are advised to pay close attention to signage through the work zone as traffic patterns will change throughout the project. Lane closures, lane restrictions, flaggers and construction personnel working in close proximity to traffic flow should be expected.

Gaddie Shamrock LLC is the prime contractor on the $6,997,279 project. Work is expected to be completed by August 15, 2016. The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted for inclement weather or unforeseeable delays.

Intersection of KY 55X and KY 206 in Adair County to reopen tomorrow
New turn lanes and signal added

SOMERSET, Ky. (July 20, 2015) – Crews are putting the final touches on the intersection of KY 55X and KY 206 in Adair County. Weather permitting, all work will wrap up tomorrow morning, July 21 and the intersection will be reopened to traffic with a new look.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 temporarily closed the intersection on May 27 for culvert pipe replacement beneath both routes (KY 55X and KY 206). While closure was in place KYTC made additions consisting of adding a left turn lane from southbound KY 55X onto KY 206 eastbound and building a right turn from KY 206 westbound onto KY 55X north.

Along with the new turn lanes, motorist will also see a new signal installed for traffic traveling southbound KY 55X. The light, like the signal installed at the KY 55X and KY 80 intersection in Columbia two years earlier, includes a flashing yellow arrow, which indicates that motorists are allowed to proceed with caution but must yield to oncoming traffic.

The new signal display has four intervalYellowFlashingLights

The flashing yellow arrow signal replaces the more traditional five-section head, which incorporates a green left turn arrow display for the protected left-turn movement and a green ball display for the permitted left turn movement. The flashing yellow arrow replaces the traditional green ball for motorists making a permitted left turn and more clearly indicates to motorists that they must yield to oncoming traffic. If the pavement sensor in the left-turn lane detects a constant presence of vehicles unable to turn on flashing yellow, the signal will ultimately display a green arrow, indicating a “protected” turn for the vehicles. For information about the signal visit transportation.ky.gov/Traffi-Operations/Pages/Flashing-Yellow-Lights.aspx.

Intersection of KY 55X and KY 206 in Adair County to remained closed for approximately two additional weeks
Project additions and weather delaying completion

SOMERSET, Ky. (July 6, 2015) – While work is progressing at the intersection of KY 55X and KY 206 in Adair County, additions to the project, along with recent weather, will delay the completion and reopening of the intersection for approximately two weeks.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 temporarily closed the intersection on May 27 for culvert pipe replacement beneath both routes (KY 55X and KY 206). The work was expected to be completed within six weeks. However, KYTC is now undergoing the task of adding turn lanes within the intersection. The addition consists of adding a left turn lane from southbound KY 55X onto KY 206 eastbound and building a right turn from KY 206 westbound onto KY 55X north. These changes, along with recent weather, will call for the intersection to remain closed past the initial six weeks
