For eighty years, the world’s greatest photojournalists have been submitting their work to the University of Missouri for inclusion in the annual Pictures of the Year International Competition (POY). From highly personal moments to the most recognizable world events, POY has been collecting our shared human history in photographic form.
The POY collection includes approximately 300,000 images that elicit a deep emotional response, helping us to not only see the power of our history, but to feel the immediacy of it. However, in their current form they are not accessible to the public.
By supporting our Friends of the Libraries fundraiser, you will help MU Libraries, along with the University of Missouri School of Journalism and Pictures of the Year International, bring photos dating back to the 1940s into the digital age, making these powerful historical tools available to all who seek them out. Your donation will allow us to hire student staff, who will scan photos on MU Libraries’ state of the art, high-definition scanner, and create meta data that will enable users to search by keywords and find that one photo that captures the moment as only a great photo can.
