This leadership training program helps adults with disabilities and parents of young children with disabilities build advocacy skills and connect with valuable resources. Today's graduation feature is on Ashton Farmer, a SOMC Genetic Counseling student! A native of Clay County, Kentucky, she aims to help bring access to genetic counseling in Appalachian Kentucky, a region that has some of the highest cancer incidence rates in the country.

MSW intern, Michael Thames, provided a thoughtful session on “Walking in Their Shoes” to provide insight into parents’ feelings as they navigate the disability system. Parents often feel frustrated, overwhelmed, scared, and exhausted as they work to advocate for their child or family member to receive the best support and services. This serves as a good reminder that empathy and compassion goes a long way.

Thank you so much to Meredith Hardage, Programs Manager, .cac for a fantastic presentation on mandatory reporting. Our social work interns loved hearing real stories and engaging in meaningful conversation! We know that children with disabilities are at higher risk of abuse and neglect and we need to be prepared to identify the signs and know the resources.
