Just weeks after his victory at Nelson's Ferry, Col. Francis Marion and a small group of patriots - outnumbered nearly four-to-one - successfully ambushed a drove off a group of loyalists. Riding north on the PeeDee River, the vanguard leader Maj. John James received news from a scout that group of 45 mounted men were riding directly toward them led by Maj. Micajah Gainey. Maj. James immediately ordered the charge and the surprise caused Maj. Gainey to take off down the road as his men scattered.

Col. Marion learned that Maj. Gainey's camp was only three miles away, and 10 minutes into his ride toward the camp, he met the loyalists lead by Capt. Jesse Barefield in full march. Knowing it was foolish to attack 200 infantry with only 50 horsemen, Col. Marion ordered his men to retreat, first slowly and then erratically to give the impression of confusion and chaos, and then set up an ambush. He concealed his men in an open, sandy area called Blue Savannah, surrounded by scrub pines. Capt. Barefield took the bait, and with weapons firing and swords swinging, Col. Marion charged with his 50 horsemen. Stunned, the loyalists fired one volley before turning and scattering in a nearby swamp. The patriots pursued to the edge of the swamp but knew they were still outnumbered, instead sending the loyalists off with shouts of insults.
