Today is National Iced Tea Day! ๐Ÿฅค๐ŸงŠ

Growing tea has a long history in South Carolina, dating back to the 18th century. Since 1995, iced tea has been the official State Hospitality Beverage of South Carolina.

Pinehurst, one of South Carolina's early tea plantations, provided plants to the Thomas J. Lipton company, who conducted research on Wadmalaw Island. Mack Fleming, a manager at Lipton, purchased a tea farm and later created the Charleston Tea Plantation (now Charleston Tea Garden).

Charleston Tea Garden brand tea is available for purchase in our SCDAH Gift Shop! ๐Ÿ›

History Spotlight: The South Carolina Statehouse ๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ›

Construction began in Charleston on South Carolinaโ€™s first statehouse in 1753 and it opened in 1756.

In 1786, the General Assembly voted to move the capitol to Columbia and then the original statehouse burned in 1788. The first Columbia statehouse was completed in 1790. By the 1850s, the building had deteriorated to the point where the General Assembly decided to build a new one, but construction was paused during the Civil War.

Federal troops burned the old statehouse when they captured Columbia in 1865, but the new, partially completed building survived. This new statehouse opened in 1869, but construction was not completed until 1903. The last major renovation on the building took place in the 1990s.
