When asked what she wanted to do for a job, Olga Custodio replied, โ€œA pilot, a pilot, or a pilot.โ€ Born in Puerto Rico in 1953, there were no Latinas flying planes for her to look up to as role models. She went on to fulfill that goal of becoming a pilot, pilot, or pilot, flying for the United States Air Force in the 1980s as the first Latina to graduate from Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training, and then putting in thousands of hours for American Airlines. On the airline side, she has time on the Boeing 727, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, and Fokker 100.

While flying for the Air Force, she received an Air Force HQ Air Education and Training Command Aviation Safety Award for superior airmanship when the Northrop T-38 she piloted was hit by a bird that caused the planeโ€™s engine to fail while she flew through bad weather. She landed the plane safely.

In 1991, the Tailhook Association's annual Naval Aviation Symposium turned into a disaster due to excessive drinking and misconduct by Navy and Marine Corps officers. Inspired by the movie "Top Gun," these officers engaged in inappropriate behavior, including sexual assault. The event featured wild parties in hotel suites, excessive drinking, st*****rs, and more.

After the symposium, numerous women reported being assaulted while navigating a hallway known as "the Gauntlet." Lt. Paula Coughlin blew the whistle on the scandal, facing dismissive responses from her superiors. It took a while for her allegations to be taken seriously, but eventually, an investigation revealed that 83 women and seven men had been assaulted.

Although 300 officers were implicated, only 140 faced disciplinary action, receiving non-judicial punishments and fines. None were charged with sexual assault. Paula Coughlin resigned from the Navy and sued the Tailhook Association and the Las Vegas Hilton, resulting in settlements and damages awarded to her.

The Tailhook Scandal exposed serious issues within the military, ultimately leading to significant changes in how such events are conducted and monitored.

Women have always been a force to be reckoned with, and today, we're shining a spotlight on the incredible story of Wally Funk and the remarkable group known as the These courageous women were true trailblazers, who, despite enduring grueling tests that showcased their unwavering determination and resilience, were never given the chance to join NASA's elite astronaut ranks. ๐Ÿ’”

In fact, this topic was close to our hearts because just last week, Dr. Roseanne Welch was on the show and she touched on the incredible story of the Mercury 13. Her insights and passion for their journey inspired us to share this today.

In the early 1960s, when the world was fixated on the first men venturing into space, these extraordinary women quietly made history. Led by the indomitable spirit of Wally Funk, they shattered stereotypes and defied the odds, proving that women were just as capable as men in their pursuit of space travel. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿš€

Through intense trials, such as enduring 10-degree water injections and immersing themselves in sensory deprivation tanks, they displayed not only their physical prowess but also their unwavering commitment to breaking barriers. These experiences underscored their exceptional self-confidence and determination, highlighting their capacity to make incredible contributions to science and space exploration, just like anyone else

Their achievements were nothing short of extraordinary. In fact, they demonstrated better cardiopulmonary health and performance in isolation testing compared to their male counterparts, making a strong case for their inclusion in NASA's astronaut program.

While their dream of becoming astronauts may have been denied, their legacy lives on. The Mercury 13 paved the way for future generations of women who dared to dream of the stars. Their tenacity and resilience inspired countless women to pursue careers in STEM fields and to aim for the skies. ๐ŸŒŸ

It's time to honor these incredible women, not just for their individual achievements but also for the doors they opened for countless others. Let's recognize and celebrate the amazing capabilities of women veterans when they are given the opportunity to soar, knowing that their determination has left an indelible mark on history and continues to inspire women around the world. ๐ŸŒ โœจ

In "Brothers," Mary Gauthier tells a powerful and poignant story of a woman who served in the military. Her story is one of courage, sacrifice, and the unyielding desire for recognition and respect as a fellow soldier.

This song sheds light on the often overlooked and underappreciated experiences of women veterans. It portrays the physical and emotional toll of serving, the struggle to hide one's emotions and pain to be seen as equal to male counterparts, and the deep longing for acknowledgment.

Together, we can amplify the voices of women veterans and ensure they receive the recognition and respect they truly deserve. Let's honor their sacrifices and let them know that they are not alone.
