Retired Warrant Officers have new options thanks to a new program with Tennessee Army National Guard CCWO. In a first-of-its-kind program, warrant officers who have retired from the Active Duty Army can now join the National Guard and continue their service.

In 2021, the U.S. Army and National Guard Bureau updated their policies to allow the National Guard the necessary tools to recruit qualified retired active-duty warrant officers. These warrant officers will keep their retirement pay while also serving in the National Guard.

“This program has been talked about for years, however, Tennessee is the first in U.S. Army history to implement this strategy,” said Brig. Gen. Warner Ross, Tennessee’s Assistant Adjutant General-Army. “This will greatly impact the readiness across our force as it allows our organization to supplement our ranks and hard to fill positions with highly qualified individuals.”

What a great day in Warrant Officer history, naming Fort Rucker after one of our own; Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Michael Novesel Sr.

Novosel enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was one of 462 aircraft commanders who flew in the covering force over Gen. Douglas MacArthur as he accepted the Japanese surrender as part of the last mission of WWII. He later left active duty but was recalled during the Korean War as a Major. Novosel was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1955 and requested active duty for the Vietnam War in 1964. After being informed the Air Force was overloaded on senior level offices, he accepted an appointment as a Warrant Officer with the Army in September 1964 and served in Vietnam, earning the Medal of Honor for bravery under fire during a medical evacuation.
Novosel was the last active duty military aviator who flew combat missions in WWII. He ended his career as a senior trainer, advisor and counseling officer at Fort Rucker. A street at Fort Rucker was renamed for Novosel before his death in recognition of his contributions to Army aviation.
