We can't start the Christmas season at the Governor's Mansion without thinking of former First Lady Ann "Tunky" Riley. Her time at the Governor's Mansion was instrumental for keeping the mansion and grounds beautiful, and inviting the Columbia Garden Club to decorate at Christmas.

The Columbia Garden Club has decorated the Governor's Mansion for over 35 years, devoting countless hours to the design and upkeep of our holiday displays. We are looking forward the 2023 holiday season!

You can schedule your December visit now using the link in bio. Christmas tours begin Tuesday, December 5th.

The current Governor's Mansion had it's start as the Arsenal Military Academy, founded in 1842 with the Citadel in Charleston. These two schools trained young men in academics and military service, but the Arsenal Military Academy was closed in 1865. Be sure to schedule your visit to learn how the Arsenal Academy became the Governor's Mansion.

South Carolina is home to a few historical firsts in American history, these pastel portraits are an example of that. Henrietta Johnston arrived in Charleston from Ireland in the early 1700's with her husband. He passed away not long after, and she needed a way to make a living and pastel portraits became her livelihood. Henrietta began creating portraits of well to do Charleston ladies, including Elizabeth Lamb Pinckney and Mary Griffith Brewton.

South Carolina has many symbols and emblems that represent our state, and the white tailed deer is one of them! In 1972 our state legislature named them our official state animal. The Governor's Mansion is home to 20 mahogany chairs with feet made to look like deer hooves in honor of our State animal. Be sure to schedule a tour with the link below to see them in person!

Did you know you can find our State Seal on a mantle in the Governor's Mansion? This was designed by Mrs. Burnet Maybank who was First Lady from 1939 to 1941, over time the seal was lost under layers of paint. Thankfully in 1964 they were discovered and highlighted in gold, you can still see today.
