CALL FOR UNPRODUCED SCRIPTS BY LGBTQ+ SOUTHERN WRITERS

The fifth Del Shores Foundation Writers Search is now open for submissions from unproduced playwrights and screenwriters who identify as LGBTQ+ and currently live in the South. CASH AWARDS are given to the semifinalists, finalists and winners and PRODUCTION GRANTS accompany the winning scripts to move their work toward production.

Based on the career and work of Sordid Lives creator and playwright/director/producer Del Shores, our mission is to identify and support new Southern LGBTQ+ playwrights and screenwriters. We're in the middle of our fifth Del Shores Foundation Writers Search and we are currently accepting scripts through the end of September 2026!

Our Writers Search includes Cash Awards for the winners with $3000 for Best Screenplay and Best Play and $1000 for Best Short/Web Series. We also award $250 to all finalists and $100 to all semifinalists and is open screenwriters and playwrights who:
• identify as LGBTQ+
• currently live in the U.S. South
• have not been produced in the submission category

We have Production Grants associated with each category:
$2000 to the production budget of the winning short film,
$10,000 to the production budget for the winning screenplay, and $10,000 to the Del Shores Foundation Theatre Partner who produces the world premiere production of the winning play.

We also have Play Finalists Reading Grants to support one-night stage readings with the writer in attendance at one of our Theatre Partners.

Additionally, each year we produce a Del Shores Foundation Writers Festival featuring live stage readings of all three winning scripts, private workshops with film and theatre professionals and public panels. ALL EVENTS ARE FREE!

We also cover all travel, accommodation and meal costs for the winning writers and finalists in all three categories who are available to attend!

Four years in, we're thrilled with the opportunities we're helping these writers find! Our 2023 Short Film Winner produced his short film SMOKE BREAKS, with the support of our Production Grant, that played film festivals last fall. Our Screenplay winners have met with executives from Ryan Murphy Productions, Shondaland Productions, Greg Berlanti Productions, A24, Universal Pictures and more.

Our 2022 Play winner had his Off-Broadway world premiere of his most recent play in 2024. The world premiere of our 2023 Play Winner was in Atlanta at Actor's Express and our 2024 Play Winner had their World Premiere in Palm Springs in May!

Landrum, SC and Polk County, NC Residents Invited to Attend Tryon International Film Festival with Free Weekend Pass

Tryon, N.C. — August 19, 2026 — Landrum residents are invited to experience the full Tryon International Film Festival (TRIFF) with a free weekend pass, made possible by funding from the Mary F. Kessler Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation.

The free pass grants access to all Saturday and Sunday film screenings, education workshops, TRIFF parties, networking events, and more. The festival, which runs October 8–11, 2026, in downtown Tryon, North Carolina, brings filmmakers from around the world together for a weekend of community, arts, and culture.

Attendees can celebrate both international and local films, meet the filmmakers, and enjoy food and beverages throughout the event.

You don’t have to be a filmmaker to enjoy TRIFF. The festival offers something for everyone—discover new stories on screen, hear directly from the people who made them, take part in engaging workshops and conversations, and connect with neighbors and visitors in a lively downtown setting. It’s a chance to experience the arts, support local culture, and be part of a welcoming community celebration.

“We’re so grateful to the Mary F. Kessler Fund and the Polk County Community Foundation for making it possible for Landrum residents to fully take part in TRIFF,” said Beau Menetre, Festival Director, Co-Founder, and Board President. “This festival has always been about bringing people together through film, and these free weekend passes help ensure our neighbors can experience every part of it—from the screenings and workshops to the parties and conversations with filmmakers.”

TRIFF features five screening venues, three education venues, and a full slate of parties and gatherings. The schedule includes:

• Thursday, October 8: Media Arts Day and Welcome Reception
• Friday, October 9: Education Institute and Networking Hour
• Saturday, October 10: Full day of film screenings, education workshops, and parties
• Sunday, October 11: Film screenings, education sessions, Awards Ceremony, and Afterparty
