“Main Street, for me, feels like coming home.

I went to school for historic preservation and community planning, and at the time, the concept of Main Street work wasn’t on the school’s radar as a career path for graduating degree-holders. Most folks graduated intent on becoming city planners, architects, preservation trades experts, or something totally unrelated. I wasn’t particularly keen on any of those things, but I found myself adjacent to what I would come to know as Main Street roles for several years after graduating.

What I didn’t realize at the time, was that I was building a unique set of skills through my time working at a Charleston carriage company, a local public library, managing an arts facility and later a very large festival, and supporting small town revitalization through marketing and promotions, all of which would lead me to Main Street exactly ten years ago this year.

It’s what I was built for. I’m grateful to do this work in my community where I live, but also mentor other communities working to do the same across the country.”

Congratulations to South Carolina's 5️⃣ Nationally Accredited Main Street America™ programs for 2026:

👏 Aiken, Aiken Downtown Development Association
👏 Florence, Downtown Florence
👏 Greenwood, Uptown Greenwood
👏 Hartsville, Main Street Hartsville
👏 Laurens, Main Street Laurens

This year, Main Street America recognized 1,291 designated programs nationwide, with 838 earning Accredited status - the highest designation. Accredited communities demonstrate excellence in community engagement, organizational capacity, preservation-based economic development, strategic programming, sustainable operations, and measurable results.

These five South Carolina communities continue to set the standard for downtown revitalization, proving that strong partnerships, local leadership, historic preservation, and a commitment to place create lasting impact.

Thank you to the staff, board members, volunteers, local governments, business owners, and community partners who make this achievement possible. Your work strengthens not only your downtowns, but the Main Street movement across South Carolina.

“I'm a public relations major at the University of South Carolina, and when I applied for the Main Street SC internship, I was eager to use my background in social media, communications, and community engagement in a meaningful way.

Attending the Main Street Summer Retreat in Greenwood brought that work to life. One of the takeaways was just how interconnected the business community is. There’s a clear spirit of collaboration with businesses actively supporting one another.

The retreat also reinforced how central relationships are to community development. Seeing Main Street leaders, business owners, and local partners come together to share ideas and solve challenges highlighted the impact that strong communication and partnership can have on downtown revitalization efforts."

Alana West, Main Street Manager City of Union, shares one idea she has brought back to her community from training.

"I love Jenny Boulware's suggestion of starting a photo bank of my community! I am new to the position of Main Street Manager so getting out and about in downtown will allow me to stop in and check on our Main Street merchants. She also had some great tips on what to take pictures of, how to take them, and how to label and file them. I can't wait to get started!"

Community engagement is key to successful downtown planning!

Main Street SC staff was invited to join Main Street Beaufort, Blake Sanders of Studio Main and their project partners for the recent Downtown Master Planning Charrette. The stakeholder meetings were all well attended and the insights shared with the planning team will be crucial to guiding their recommendations.

“Walterboro has given me a sense of community and home, and I want to help other people find that same connection.

I already go out into my community and help as much as possible. When I saw there was going to be an outreach program that did that, I knew I needed to be a part of it.

I'm looking forward to getting to know my community a lot better. As a person who isn't originally from Colleton County, I've had the opportunity to build relationships and find my place here, and I want to help strengthen those connections for others as well.

I'm a veteran, but I was born and raised in South Carolina, in the small town of Ehrhardt. My mom is here. My siblings are here -- that's why I came back.

One of the biggest things I've learned during the Ambassador Training is that we have a lot of common goals for our community. There are so many people doing great things throughout Walterboro, and the more we learn about one another and celebrate those contributions, the stronger our community becomes.”
