Winds today, Wednesday, October 29, are forecasted to gust to 30 miles per hour. We ask that you refrain from any open burning today. It only takes one small ember carried by the wind to create a large, fast spreading fire. Despite the rain we had last week, conditions are still very dry. We are extremely humbled by the turnout today. We can’t thank everyone enough for coming out to support, this was by far the largest crowd we have had in years.

Today is the day! We are ready for our annual Ice Cream Social. This is something our Department has done 40+ years for the community. Bring the family down to enjoy cold drinks, colder ice cream, and the crowd favorite Sloppy Joe’s!!! 4:00-7:30

Our dine-in flavors are Vanilla, Chocolate, Lemon, Strawberry.

Carry out flavors in quarts are Vanilla, Chocolate, Lemon, Strawberry, Maple, Raspberry, Black Cherry, and Mint Chocolate Chip (with chocolate chips 🤫).

Make sure you come hungry! We will have Sloppy Joe’s, Hot Dogs, and Hot Ham sandwich’s to eat along with to-go meals available.

Effective 3:15 p.m. Friday, September 20th, the Whitley County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Whitley County Fire Chiefs Association, enacted a County-wide Burn Ban.

The following activities are prohibited:
🔥 Campfires and other recreational fires
🔥 Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood or other combustible matter, with the exception of grills fueled by charcoal briquettes, natural gas, or propane
🔥 Burning in burn barrels
🔥 The burning of debris, such as timber or vegetation (grass and leaves), including such debris that result from building construction activities
🔥 Fireworks
🔥 Charcoal from permitted grills shall not be removed from grills until the charcoal has been thoroughly extinguished

The decision is based on the extremely dry conditions Indiana as a whole has experienced over the last month, which, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, has placed Whitley County in the category of D1, Moderate Drought. Any rain forecast will likely not be significant enough to pe*****te deep enough and will quickly evaporate on the surface. We will need several days of rain to offset the drought conditions.

The Fire Chiefs will review conditions weekly to determine if the ban should remain in place or be lifted. Hopefully we get the much needed rain soon. We appreciate your support and cooperation in this matter.
