Week 3 of our 37 weeks! (Just a little late)
Student Chosen: Jerry Turner – Junior
Jerry is a junior at DCC, and if you walk through our halls during passing periods, there is a good chance you have heard him without even realizing it. We are fortunate to regularly hear music coming from the pianos in our hallways, and much of the time, Jerry is the one playing.
Jerry is a strong student who, although often quiet, makes the spaces around him better. He loves playing both the piano and guitar. He enjoys Global Politics and IB Biology, and outside of school he enjoys hiking and walking.
This year, however, Jerry did something that really stood out.
Jerry stepped outside of his comfort zone and spoke with hundreds of students to gather signatures for a petition requesting improvements to some of our school bathrooms. For someone who describes himself as quiet, this was a significant step. More importantly, Jerry didn't simply notice something that could be better—he took action to make his school better.
Because Jerry was willing to speak up, we became aware of some maintenance issues, including broken door locks, and have already begun making improvements.
We really appreciate Jerry's initiative, courage, and willingness to advocate for his school community.
Teacher/Staff Chosen: Mr. David King - Assistant Principal
Jerry chose Mr. King for this week's Thunder & Lightning Award.
When I asked Jerry why he selected him, his answer was simple but powerful:
“He helped inspire me to get out of my comfort zone.”
That statement says so much about the impact educators can have on students.
One of the things that makes Mr. King so special at DCC is that he sees students. He truly models our theme of “Love More.”
When Jerry was new to DCC, Mr. King quickly got to know him and helped him adjust to a new school. Whether at an event, in the hallway, or simply during the normal busyness of a school day, Mr. King intentionally builds relationships with students that matter. He helped Jerry feel welcomed, valued, and cared for at DCC.
Mr. King is quick to offer help to anyone who needs it and leads with the heart of a servant. His leadership has helped make DCC a special place for both students and staff.
And now, we can see the ripple effect of that relationship: a student who was encouraged to step outside his comfort zone is now using his voice to make his school better.
That is what Love More looks like.
