Our Story

According to the Report to the Parks Commission, "General Palmer's plan for a park system was bold, far-sighted and comprehensive. He sought to surround the city with near-by parks, mountain driveways, woodland paths, and trails; to furnish places for healthful outdoor exercise and quiet restful enjoyment." The City continues to build on this legacy through a diverse network of parks, recreation, trails and cultural amenities - a direct result of decades of work, leadership and investment by the community. Today, the department maintains

•145 Neighborhood Parks
•7 Regional Parks
•146 Miles of Urban Trail
•14,000 acres of Open Space
•5 Community Centers
•2 Golf Course
•2 Cemeteries
•3 Sports Complexes
•87 Pieces of Public Art
•Plus 1 Museum, 1 Auditorium and 1 14,115' Mountain

With a heritage of community and economic development at the forefront, this department commits to providing a high quality of life for residents and a world class destination for visitors. Welcome and come enjoy our park properties, recreational opportunities and cultural resources that provides our City with it's character and distinctiveness. Social Media Disclaimer

🔥 Thousands climb the Manitou Incline… but not many do it wearing firefighter gear weighing up to 75 pounds.

On September 11, first responders will take on the Incline in remembrance of those who gave their lives that day. Each step is a tribute, each pause a moment of reflection.

🚨 To allow space for this important climb, the Incline will be closed until 9 AM. 🚨

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We never forget.

We thank our first responders for carrying the weight of remembrance—and our community for honoring this tradition alongside them. 🇺🇸

🌳 The future of COSParks is taking shape—and now the draft is in your hands.

If you play in a park, explore a trail, visit an open space, join a recreation program or enjoy one of our cultural sites, the ImagineCOSParks: Park System Master Plan is about the places and experiences you know and love.

The plan updates the City’s 2014 plan and creates a 10–15 year roadmap for our full park system. Thank you for your patience while our team reviewed community input and carefully refined the draft.

Now it’s your turn: Did we get it right? Tell us!
📝 Review the draft and take the survey through Sept. 22(Available in English & Spanish).

💬 Stop by either drop-in community open house:
📍 Sept. 10 | 5–6 p.m. | Piñon Valley Park Pavilion
📍 Sept. 16 | 5–6 p.m. | PRCS Headquarters
There won’t be a formal presentation, stop by anytime during the scheduled hour to explore the plan and talk with the project team.
