🏈🔥 It’s Football Saturday!

If your game-day plans include the TV on, something in the slow cooker, and the grill fired up outside, we have just one reminder:

Football season may be here. Fall weather is not. 🥵

We’ve had plenty of hot, dry weather lately, so give that grill some space. Keep it outdoors and away from the house, deck railings, overhangs, dry grass, and anything else that can burn. Stay with it while you’re cooking, and make sure everything is completely cooled down when you’re finished.

☀️ If you’re spending game day outside, remember the heat can sneak up on you. Drink plenty of water, take a break inside or in the shade every now and then, and keep an eye on your fellow football fans too.

Enjoy the games, enjoy the food, and cheer for whoever you want, we won’t judge. (Much.)

🏈 Just keep the grill where it belongs, stay cool, and keep game day from getting a little too exciting...

🔥 A little fire safety, a little first aid, and a LOT of great questions!

A-shift at Fire House 5 had a great time welcoming Girl Scout Troop 13768 from St. George's Independent School to the firehouse for some hands-on learning while they worked toward their safety and first aid badge requirements.

Visits like these are about more than checking off a badge requirement. They give kids a chance to meet their local firefighters, explore fire and EMS equipment, learn skills they can use at home, and maybe even discover an interest in a career they hadn’t considered before. 👩‍🚒🚒

Scouts, homeschool groups, school organizations, clubs and other community groups, we’d love to see you, too!

Collierville Fire & Rescue offers firehouse tours and educational opportunities that can be tailored to your group’s age, interests or educational requirements. Whether you’re working toward a badge, learning about first aid and fire safety, exploring careers, or simply want to see what happens inside your local firehouse, come learn with us.

🔥 Ready to plan a visit?

Head to ColliervilleTN.gov/Fire to learn more and submit a request. We ask that firehouse tour requests be submitted at least two weeks in advance so we can coordinate with our working crews.

🎒🚒 School may have started in August, but today was OUR first day back!

Backpacks? ✔️
First-day pictures? ✔️
Slightly different school supplies than everyone else? ✔️

Today kicked off another year of KidSafe and fire & life safety education throughout schools in Collierville!

Throughout the year, our crews will be spending time in classrooms helping students learn safety skills they can use at school, at home, and everywhere in between. From meeting firefighters in their gear and knowing when to call 9-1-1, to home fire drills, injury prevention, fire safety, and recognizing everyday hazards, there’s plenty on the lesson plan.

We’re excited to be back with our students for another year.

And yes, we made them take first-day-of-school pictures. 😂📸🚒

🔥🎨 Need a little inspiration for your Fire Prevention Week poster?

Collierville Fire & Rescue’s Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest is underway! This year’s NFPA Fire Prevention Week theme is:

⚡ “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” ⚡

This year, we’re asking students to use their creativity to help teach our community how simple charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.

Not sure what to draw? Pick a charging “superpower” and turn it into your poster!

🔌 Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🛏️ Soft surface? Hard pass.
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

🔋 Fully charged? Time to unplug.
Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

⚠️ Feels hot? Stop using it.
If a device gets very hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, stop using it.

🛴 For tools and rides, charge outside.
Charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible, and never block an exit while charging.

🛒 Battery safety starts before you plug in.
Choose products listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

Your poster can feature phones, tablets, headphones, gaming devices, toys, scooters, e-bikes, power tools, or any other creative way you can show off your safe-charging superpowers! ⚡🦸

🎨 Contest Reminders:
• Open to Collierville students in grades K–12, including public, private, and homeschool students
• Artwork must be handmade
• Posters may be no larger than 11" × 17"
• Winners will be selected by grade, with an Accessible Arts Division also available
• Posters should reflect this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme and safety messages

📅 Entries are due no later than 4:00 PM on Monday, September 21.

⚡ Quite a few homes are without power at the moment, and judging by the sound around town, the generators have officially clocked in for their shift.

While we all hope this outage is a short one, here are a few important reminders to keep everyone safe until the lights come back on:

🔌 Generators belong OUTSIDE. Always.
Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows and vents. Garages, even with the door open, are not safe places to run one.

💨 Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” for a reason.
Make sure you have working CO alarms in your home, especially when using a generator or other fuel-burning equipment.

⚡ Don’t backfeed your home.
Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. It can send electricity back onto power lines and create a serious hazard for utility crews working to restore power.

⛽ Let it cool before you refuel.
Gasoline and hot generator parts are not a combination we want meeting each other.

🕯️ Skip the candles if you can.
Flashlights and battery-powered lights are a much safer choice. Your house does not need to become a historical reenactment just because the power is out.

🚪 Check on your neighbors.
Especially older adults, anyone who relies on electrically powered medical equipment, and those who may need a little extra help during an outage.

Hopefully, by the time you finish reading this, the power is already coming back on. Until then, stay safe, Collierville.

🎥🔥 Collierville high school students, this one’s for you!

Are you into video production, social media, graphic design or creating content? Put those skills to work and help us spread an important fire safety message!
The Collierville Fire & Rescue Fire Prevention Week Digital Media/PSA Contest is back! Students can work individually or in teams of up to four to create a short, 30-second PSA based on this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Safe Charging is Your Superpower.”
The contest is open to public, private and homeschool students in grades 9–12 who live in Collierville.

🏆 And there’s something new this year! In addition to our local contest, students will also have the opportunity to compete, win and be recognized at the state level!

Last year, our students showed us just how creative they can be, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with this year.

📅 Local entries are due September 18.

Think driving a fire engine is just about lights, sirens and knowing how to handle a really big fire engine?🚒

There’s a little more to it than that. And by “a little,” we mean… hope you remember your math.

You’ve seen us celebrate firefighters who have been promoted to the rank of Driver, but this week, some of our next generation of up-and-coming Drivers are learning exactly what it takes to earn that seat during Pumper Driver/Operator training.

Getting the engine safely to the scene is only part of the job. Once they arrive, the Driver/Operator has an entirely different responsibility: getting water to the firefighters who need it.

That means knowing how to calculate pump discharge pressure, friction loss through different sizes and lengths of hose, nozzle pressure, elevation changes and flow requirements. Change the hose length, nozzle, elevation or water supply, and the numbers change too.

Then they have to turn those calculations into real-world results at the pump panel.

They’re also practicing hydrant and water supply operations, drafting, relay pumping, apparatus placement, inspections, troubleshooting and the many other skills that come with operating a fire engine.
It’s part math, part mechanics, part problem-solving and a whole lot of responsibility.

Because the firefighters on the other end of that hoseline are depending on their Driver to get it right.

So the next time you see us congratulate someone on being promoted to Driver, you’ll know earning that seat involves a whole lot more than knowing how to drive the engine.

For now, our future Drivers are putting in the work, doing the math and getting ready for the day it’s their turn to take the wheel.

Saturday’s storms left trees down, and many of our neighbors without power, but as the skies cleared, our firefighters were glad to spend the opening Collierville Dragons football game with the community we are proud to serve.

Yesterday, Tennessee also said goodbye to someone who spent a lifetime reminding us about kindness, resilience and taking care of one another.

“Storms make trees take deeper roots.” — Dolly Parton

A fitting reminder after a stormy Saturday, and one worth carrying with us long after the skies clear.
