With Election Day tomorrow it seemed like a good time to boost this post I put out before early voting started. People are very passionate about many of the things going on in our community right now. That is not a bad thing! We need to act with temperance and reason, though, as we move forward. Be cautious before putting things out in the community that are hurtful because, after this election is done, we will all still be neighbors.
I posted some biblical support for being kind and lifting each other up before. Now I’m going to add Socrates Three Filters. Is it true? Is it good? Is it necessary? These are the questions you should ask yourself before you speak. There have been a number of things put out that I don’t feel meet any of those tests. Then there are some who think that just passing the first test makes it ok. Truth is not subjective. Context is, though, and the impact of how we share truth needs to be considered. Share truth but be cautious to share it as kindly as you can. When deciding if something is necessary be thoughtful and honest with yourself about why you feel it is needful. It is easy to let your emotions guide you into a justification that isn’t always fair.
Just some things to think about as we near the end of the race and emotions are getting high. No one is perfect. We can all say things we don’t necessarily believe in the heat of the moment. If that happens apologize and make it right if you can. Be kind and listen to others with an open mind. Consider the evidence and make your decisions based on the facts and your beliefs. Treat others as you would wish to be treated.
