The Malta Study Center, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library

Digital preservation of the cultural hertiage of Malta and the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

The Malta Study Center maintains a digital collection of over 2.5 million manuscript images and a microfilm collection of more than 16,000 documents and dossiers of documents from Malta, covering the period of the 12th to the 20th century. The materials include the Archives of the Knights of Malta, the Cathedral Museum in Mdina, the Archives of the Inquisition, ecclesiastical records of the dioceses of Malta and Gozo, and musical compositions. The Center now sponsors digitization projects to preserve the history of Malta and the Knights of Saint John. It acquires antiquarian and modern publications dealing with Malta's history, literature, and culture, in addition to materials pertaining to the Knights of Saint John and Mediterranean history.

Today HMML's Malta Study Center was pleased to support the one seminar "Fragments Across Borders: Reconstructing the Histories of Military Orders through Dispersed Archives and Unexplored Collections" offered as part of the IX International Military Orders Conference. The Seminar was held at The National Archives of Malta in Rabat and focused on the tribunals of the Knights of St John as a primary case study, the workshop proposes to discuss a flexible framework applicable to other military orders on how to deal with archival displacement and shares the activities conducted through national and international projects in Malta. HMML's Malta Study Center is pleased to co-sponsor and support the exhibition "Cor Unum Multiplicia Nomina: Rethinking the Langue of Italy in Contexts" at the National Library of Malta as part of the IX International Military Orders Conference in Valletta. The exhibition will run from September 9 until November 20, 2026. The exhibition was coordinated by Dr. Valeria Vanesio, Dr. Emanuel Buttigieg, and Christian Mifsud. Today celebrates Victory Day in Malta (1565, 1800, 1943), as well as the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The map of Philippe Thomassin printed in the 1588 Statutes of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem provides a narrative view of the Great Siege of 1565, with the Virgin Mary and child in the upper right corner uniting the two events into a single narrative. A volume from the Magna Curia Castellaniae Registro delli patenti et bollettini at The National Archives of Malta digitized by the Malta Study Center this past spring. The images are currently in process, and we hope to make the collection available online by the end of 2026.

Our work at the Museum of the Order of St John will include the digitization of the important watercolors from Charles Frederick de Brocktorff, which provide an important visual record of the Conventual Church of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in Valletta after the expulsion of the Order in 1798.

Although we have slowed down a bit with the heat in August, we continue digitizing the Archives of the Order of Malta at the National Library of Malta, currently working on the Libri bullarum. Part of our partnership with Malta Libraries to create access to this important collection.

A lovely copy of the Office of the Dead of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, printed in Paris in 1741. The edition stands out for being printed by Élisabeth Dubois, the widow of Laurent d'Houry, who was the Order's printer in Paris before he passed away in 1725. An engraving by Louis Mazzara showing Fungus Rock in Gozo with a rope cable car connecting the small islet with the larger island. This 19th-century feature was novel, as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem had restricted access to the islet to protect the plant Cynomorium coccineum, which they believed had medicinal properties.
