Individuals living in long-term care facilities deserve high-quality person-centered care, to experience quality of life, and be treated with dignity and respect. Consumer Voice surveyed residents of long-term care to find out what life is really like for them on a day-to-day basis. We asked questions regarding whether they are treated with dignity, have access to technology, and the issues that impact their daily life like staffing, food, and activities. We also asked questions about whether they are able to live life on their own terms.

Consumer Voice received answers from more than 450 residents and their responses were eye-opening. Read the full report:https://theconsumervoice.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Resident-Report-2025.pdf

NOV 1 INSTALLMENT OF 55+ EMPOWERMENT & ENRICHMENT SERIES | REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Jackson Rainer, Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and contributor to the digital publication Next Avenue, will be presenting on Third Places.

"The world in which we now live is fragmented and polarized. Much of what we knew as the common good has been abandoned in favor of the entitled view of 'I want what I want, and I want it now, regardless of the expense it may mean to anyone else.' Social scientists studying this phenomenon consistently report the loss of community as a significant contributor to loneliness and a diminished sense of personal agency...."

"Third places are distinct anchors of community life, facilitating and fostering broader, more creative interaction with others.... A third place allows you to relax in public, encounter familiar faces and make new acquaintances. It is each person's 'Cheers,' a place where everybody knows your name."

Do you know - the majority of adults who reach "old age" are likely to need care and assistance?

Research published recently by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University shows that "housing and care costs together can represent a “dual burden” on older households that grows more severe with age as health and functional abilities decline" and "those unable to afford needed services at home have very few options for public funding or payment assistance to meet these needs."

"....[Analyzing data for the sample population of] nearly ten million single and partner households with a resident at least 75 years old in metros across the country, fully 7.5 million (76 percent) were unable to afford daily care from a home health aide in 2021 after accounting for housing and living costs. Further, existing programs are not likely to meet these needs."

Contact us if you are interested in helping to implement the Village model to offer additional resources for aging in place. Villages are based on neighbors helping neighbors, through a membership-oriented, structured arrangement, filling in gaps to strengthen elders' ability to live longer in their homes.

Contact any of the numerous advocacy groups to explore opportunities to respond to care affordability problems, such as the ones surveyed in the Joint Center report.
