The Afro-American History Society is an organization of present and former NARA employees. This organization was founded by dedicated employees on March 27, 1980 after splitting from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The AAHS was founded with the purpose of "aiding research in black history" at the National Archives of the United States.

Please join AAHS on Wednesday, Nov 13th for a special lecture in honor of Veteran's Day by Dr. Frank Smith, Director of the African American Civil War Museum in Washington, DC.

Dr. Smith's presentation, "Michelle Obama's Civil War Legacy" will detail and explore the rich history of military service in Michelle Obama's family through the use of records maintained and preserved by her family.

The event is FREE to the public and takes place at the National Archives at College Park (MD) in Lecture Room D at 11 a.m.

Congress has restored funding of appropriated activities and the National Archives has begun to resume normal operations.

Staff will be recalled in a phased manner and should wait to hear from a supervisor before reporting to work.

The Research Rooms at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, the National Archives at College Park, MD, Presidential Libraries, and all archival field sites will be closed to the public through Monday January 28 to give staff time to ensure the proper protection of holdings.

The National Archives Museum in Washington, DC and Presidential Library Museums will open to the public as they complete re-start procedures and are ready to accept visitors from the public.

Please join the Afro-American History Society for its Women's History Month on Thursday, March 15, 2018 George Washington University professor, Gayle Wald, PhD will share her research in “Remembering Rosetta Tharpe: A Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer.” Tharpe was an African-American guitar virtuoso, who proved in spectacular fashion that women could rock. She produced music that crossed boundaries, defied classification, and disregarded the social and cultural norms of the age; incorporating elements of gospel, blues, jazz, popular ballads, folk, country, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll. Lecture Room E, 10:45 am.
