Whitman County Fire District 11 was established in 1957 to provide fire protection for the rural areas surrounding Colfax, Albion, and Steptoe. In 1991, Fire District 9 (Diamond) joined, expanding the district’s coverage.

Today, the district delivers EMS, rescue, and both structural and wildland fire protection across these communities. We also respond countywide through mutual aid agreements. Mutual aid allows emergency responders to assist one another across jurisdictional lines when an incident exceeds local resources—such as major fires, disasters, or multi‑alarm events. Effective mutual aid requires that all participating agencies contribute resources and support.

Fire District 11 is funded through a property‑based tax levy. The cities of Colfax and Albion are not part of our taxing district, but as neighboring communities, we frequently assist them through mutual aid responses.

Ambulance service within the district is provided by our long‑time partner, VFI (Colfax Ambulance).

The district currently operates four stations and 18 apparatus:

Colfax Station

• Brush truck (owned and operated by District 11)
• Two attack trucks (owned and operated by District 11)
• Water tender (owned and operated by District 11)
• Rescue truck (owned and operated by District 11)

Steptoe Station

• EMS aide vehicle (owned and operated by District 11)
• Two attack trucks (owned and operated by District 11)
• Water tender (owned and operated by District 11)

Albion Station

• Two attack trucks (owned and operated by District 11)
• Two water tenders (owned and operated by District 11)
• Attack tender (owned and operated by District 11)
• Ambulance (owned and operated by VFI)

Diamond Station

• EMS aide vehicle (owned and operated by District 11)
• Attack truck (owned and operated by District 11)
• Water tender (owned and operated by District 11)
• Pumper tender (owned and operated by District 11)

🔥 Training Night at Schmuck Park! 🔥

Tonight, members from Steptoe, Colfax, and Diamond came together at Schmuck Park for a joint training focused on hand line operations and tender operations for rural water supply.

We started out pretty mild… and then cranked it all the way up to wild. Exactly how good training should be.

Every firefighter put in the work, learned something new, and had a great time doing it. It’s always impressive to see multiple stations come together and operate as one.

🚒 We trained like we fight fire — as a team.

🔥 Blast From the Past! 🔥

Did you know that Diamond had its own fire district until 1991? It was officially known as Whitman County Fire District 9. One of our members recently found this old sticker hanging by the phone in their shop — a little time capsule from our community’s fire history.

And speaking of history… check out these photos of our Attack Truck, retired in 2021. Tucked under its ladder, it proudly carried a piece of its past — a reminder of how far we’ve come and the generations of volunteers who kept our community safe.

It’s always amazing to see how the tools, trucks, and people who came before us helped shape the district we are today.

🚒❤️ Honoring the past, serving the present, preparing for the future

Looking forward to serving our community in 2026!

🔥 Training Night Recap 🔥

Tonight our crew put in some great work during training. We focused on building confidence with our SCBAs, practicing search drills inside a building, and working with props to maneuver through tight spaces. Everyone had a great time and picked up something new along the way. More importantly, we’re becoming more comfortable with our air packs in realistic working situations—an essential skill that keeps us sharp, safe, and ready to serve our community.

Shameless plug? Guilty. But seriously—we’re always in need of volunteers. Your community needs you more than you know.

Training night at Diamond Fire was a hands-on success! Six dedicated members gathered for an evening of learning and teamwork. Brian kicked things off with a refresher on SCBAs, reinforcing key safety skills from recent training. Then we dove into a full teardown of pumper tender 1121—every tool came off the truck as we explored its name, function, and proper placement. It was a fun, productive night filled with laughter, learning, and a deeper understanding of our equipment. Every hour we spend sharpening our skills is a promise to serve our community with confidence, care, and readiness.

SCBA Training Night in Diamond

The first and third Tuesday nights are designated training nights in Diamond. Last night, five members attended the session, which focused on Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs)—including how they work, why they’re used, and how to properly don them.

The training was especially valuable for two newer members who hadn’t used SCBAs before. Everyone had the opportunity to practice multiple times, and by the end of the evening, the group felt more comfortable and confident with the equipment.

Training nights like this help keep everyone sharp and ready for the job.

Earlier today, crews from Fire District 11 Diamond, in collaboration with units from Fire District 11 Colfax and Steptoe, responded to a structure fire on Green Hollow Road. Upon arrival, the situation escalated into a small wildland fire, ultimately burning approximately one acre.

The structure lost was a small outbuilding, but thanks to the swift and coordinated response from all involved departments, the fire was contained without further structures being damaged. Most importantly, all personnel returned home safely.
