Coleman Fire Department We provide structural and wildland fire protection for the City of Coleman and Coleman County.

We also provide technical rescue, initial hazmat response, and respond in any capacity needed.

As hunters head outdoors this weekend, remember that many activities associated with hunting and camping can accidentally start a wildfire.

Vehicles, trailers, ATVs/UTVs and campfires can all cause wildfires when conditions are dry.

Before heading out...
🔥 Check local burn bans and restrictions
🔥Avoid driving or parking on dry grass
🔥Make sure trailer chains don’t drag on the road
🔥Always fully extinguish campfires before leaving

Update 10:57- Roadway is now open.

Coleman Fire Department in Cooperation with the Coleman Police Department have thru traffic on Walnut street shut down, from Dallas street to Palestine street, while Atmos repairs a gas leak. If you are traveling on this route, please seek an alternate route.

*Update at 731PM* Command is calling the fire stopped at this time. Personnel will be working the fire line for a while

Units from multiple departments are responding to a wildland fire on Highway 283 North at the Callahan County line. Units from Callahan County are responding as well. Please avoid area if possible to allow units quicker access.

A large percentage of wildfires are caused by human error. With hot, dry conditions getting nice and comfortable in our area and not planning on leaving any time soon, here are some reminders for outdoor fire safety:
1. When performing hot work (welding, cutting, etc.), plan on performing work earlier in the morning when possible (lower temps and higher humidity), always have a water supply and safety spotter on hand, and create a fuel-free area downwind of the work if possible.
2. Take the opportunity to look around your home and create a safe barrier by watering or removing fuels, such as dead grasses, from around buildings.
3. Don’t park vehicles in tall grass areas, and avoid driving in these areas altogether if possible. Hot components, such as catalytic converters, can easily ignite dry fuels.
4. When towing, check and double-check all chains prior to beginning tow and at any stops during the trip. Loose/broken chains can cause extra headaches by igniting multiple fires over long distances, taxing resources.
5. At this point, you probably shouldn’t even shuffle your feet too hard until we get some rain. Shuffle indoors only until the fall.

CFD responded to a reported grass fire on East Mesquite this afternoon. Several trailers, stacks of tires and a small outbuilding were located within the burn area, which made for lots of smoke and heavy fire conditions.

There were no injuries with this fire. We were assisted by CPD, CCSO, Coleman Community Watch, Sacred Cross EMS and City personnel.

This morning CFD personnel responded to an automatic fire alarm at Holiday Hill nursing home. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a working fire.

On arrival, due to quick actions by nursing home staff, residents were already evacuated to safety and the fire had been contained using handheld extinguishers. CFD personnel checked for fire extension and cleared the smoke from the building.

We were assisted on scene by Coleman Police Department, Coleman County Sheriffs Office, and Sacred Cross EMS. No injuries were reported with this incident.

Multiple departments are working a wildfire in the Gouldbusk area at this time

The burn ban for Coleman County is in effect. No outdoor burning is allowed at this time. Outdoor cooking, such as with wood grills and smokers, is still allowed. Keep a close eye on embers and ash, as fires can easily start accidentally.

Update at 6:07PM Highway is back open

Update at 4:59PM Power has been restored

Personnel are working a vehicle accident on Highway 84 where a tractor-trailer has taken down a utility pole. Utility crews are working to restore power
