Branch County Conservation District

Branch County Conservation District Preserving your resources, serving you. The Branch County Conservation District is governed by a locally elected, five-member Board of Directors.

The Directors make decisions regarding the District's programs and activities and hire qualified staff. The staff provide information, technical assistance, workshops, public education, cost-share opportunities, as well as affordable tress/shrubs to enhance wildlife and reforestation. Since it was organized in 1948, the Branch County Conservation District has provided for the care, use, and conser

vation of our county's natural resources by creating an awareness of conservation issues and by being the leader in providing innovative assistance. Wildlife habitat development, reforestation projects, surface and groundwater protection and environmental education are all a part of our effort to ensure that landowners preserve their piece of Michigan for their children and future generations.

Did you know that shagbark hickory nuts provide food for a variety of wildlife such as squirrels, turkeys, waterfowl, and even people? They have an excellent flavor and can often be substituted for pecans. These trees can grow to over 100 feet tall and are easy to recognize because of the shaggy appearance of their bark.

Interested in planting your own shagbark hickory? They are available in our tree sale!

Did you know rabbits can lay 300 eggs per year? Just kidding, that is an Easter myth, but eastern cottontails do have up to seven litters annually. This means they can potentially have as many as 56 babies (which are called kittens/kits)! You'll often find these rabbits tucked away in large brush piles and munching on the early green growth in your yard! They prefer to eat dandelions, clover, alfalfa, and a myriad of other plants.

This holiday weekend, entrance your family with these fun facts about rabbits!

We are just under one week out until our 2026 Annual Meeting! We are looking forward to having an evening of learning, networking, and celebration of the past year! Our speaker will be Vanessa Frias of Willowbrook Farms in Cassopolis, MI!

Vanessa is a first-generation farmer proving that small-scale livestock operations can be a powerful tool for environmental restoration. As the owner of Willowbrook Farms—a Black and Hispanic-owned, 35-acre operation—Vanessa focuses on the intersection of animal husbandry and forest ecology.

This will be a great opportunity to ask questions! Don't miss out on this wonderful event. Happening Thursday, March 12th from 5:30-7:30pm at the Coldwater Township Hall.

The event is free to attend! Please RSVP on our website www.branchcd.org.
