Kiwanis Club of Coldwater

Kiwanis Club of Coldwater We are volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan.

In the early years, members focused on business networking. In 1916, Kiwanis became an international organization with the creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario. In 1919, the organization changed its focus to service. By 1962, worldwide expansion was approved. In 1987, women officially were allowed into the membership.

How time flies! Can’t believe it’s already been a week since Branch County United Way’s Color Run, of which we were a proud participant.

And speaking of United Way, their new Executive Director Nate Cranson will be our guest speaker at Monday’s meeting. We invite everyone to join us and we look forward to hearing about all the great things planned under Nate’s leadership!

All these items and more are able to be recycled here in Coldwater at Biz Aid LLC - Recycling.

Whether you are an area resident or have a business, Biz Aid owner Samantha and her team are there to help you with all your recycling needs!

Thank you to Samantha for being our guest speaker at this week’s meeting. As such, we are placing a book in her honor at one of our local elementary schools (and know that if the time ever comes to recycle it, we know where to go 😉).

Congrats to the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence on their 40th anniversary, and thank you to Kim Winchell Hemker for being our guest speaker last week.

She talked about the early beginnings with the first shelter at St. Charles parish to the new Child Advocacy Center, services they provide, recent funding cuts, and fundraising efforts.

Save the date on Oct 17 for a celebration of their 40th year with a fundraising gala to help them continue their great work within the community.

Recently we have had presentations by Michael Beard from Student Leadership Services and from Kiwanis member Lori Hunt.

Beard spoke on SLS, a student-led organization empowering teens to create safe, healthy, and inclusive schools. The program helps create stronger student leaders and a more positive school culture, along with offering greater community impact and more opportunities for students to shine.

Lori continued the discussion of her proposed community service project for Kiwanis, which will go before the board for consideration soon.

We thank them and all of our guest speakers, and as a thank you, will place a book in each of their names at an area elementary school.

If you want to catch our next Kiwanis meeting, tomorrow is a special evening meeting at Ponderosa. If you’re interested, we will see you there at 6PM!

In case you were wondering why the flags were taken down on the south side of Chicago Street and on South Monroe and on South Hanchett Street it is so they won't interfere with the vendor booths for Strawberry Fest. They will be put back up Sunday morning. We also wanted to let everyone know we are leaving the flags in the Coldwater neighborhoods up until after July 4th rather than taking them down now and putting them back out in less than two weeks. Leave us a message if you are interested in getting a flag for your home or business. It is not too late to get one before July 4th.
