NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS: We are seeking highly motivated individuals aged 18 or older to join our team as Summer Community Service Officers (CSOs). This civilian position offers a unique opportunity to serve the Colchester community by working alongside sworn officers to enhance public safety, provide community outreach, and ensure a positive presence in our town’s most active areas across varying hours, including shifts that cover nights, weekends, and holidays.

This is an ideal summer position for those who enjoy being outdoors, interacting with the public, and staying active. You will primarily operate at our various town parks and boating access points, acting as a resource for residents and visitors alike via:
-Community Engagement: Interact daily with the public to provide information, directions, and assistance at parks, beaches, and boat launches.
-Support Operations: Work alongside sworn officers to assist with non-criminal duties, which may include traffic control at special events or scenes, and performing safety checks.
-Patrol & Observation: Conduct bike and vehicle patrols of town property to ensure a safe environment for all.
-Communication: Utilize a department-issued radio to maintain contact with dispatch and other officers.
-Safety & First Aid: Monitor community safety concerns and provide initial assistance during emergencies until medical services arrive.

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and successfully pass a criminal background check. The ability to ride a bicycle is required, as bike patrol is a primary component of the role, as is a valid driver’s license.

All summer CSO hires will complete a mandatory orientation the week prior to the start of the summer season for CPR and other specialized training.

From April 12-18, we join in celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week!

We thank and honor these "headset heroes" from near and far-- including those from neighboring agencies with whom we work closely on a consistent basis, and especially our own: the 6 full-time Colchester Communications Specialists, the 2 per diem dispatchers on staff, and our 2 Colchester Police Department employees who are primarily assigned elsewhere but help out in the Communications Center when needed.

These dedicated, hard workers are the first to answer the call for the public when in need of CPD, Colchester Rescue Squad, Colchester Fire Department, or Colchester Technical Rescue, and we are grateful for their contribution to emergency response and service for the Town.

DYK: We have a bin for the safe disposal of prescription drugs in our 24/7 lobby where you can drop unused or expired medications.

However, we have found that there have also been some things put in the bin that can just be tossed in the trash. Pictured below are some of these items including: over-the-counter medications, needles that are auto injections, and vitamins.

Please help us save space in the bin for prescription medications and dispose of everything else in the garbage; if you are unsure if it should go in the bin, you can ask someone at the window in our lobby for assistance.

Also, please remember to speak with your prescribing doctor about proper disposal of medications if you are unsure.

Yesterday morning, the Colchester Police Department held a brief ceremony to bestow the Life Saving Award to Ofc. Mevludin Bahonjic and Ofc. Hunter Tabor for their role in providing life-saving aid to a gunshot victim last April.

In reading from the award nomination, Chief Peter Hull said that on April 12, 2025, at approximately 1:20 am, the officers were sent to a report of gunshots in the area of Hegeman Ave. in the Fort Ethan Allen neighborhood of Colchester. They located an unresponsive male victim who had been shot in the chest, stomach and upper leg. The officers immediately called for medical assistance, then applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg and a chest seal dressing to the abdomen. The victim has since fully recovered.

Chief Hull stated, “Officer Bahonjic and Officer Tabor’s swift response to the area, rapid assessment of the scene, clear communications, and appropriate application of medical intervention undoubtedly saved the victim’s life.”
