It’s that time of year again when we see the big yellow buses start moving through our streets and the kids make their way back to school. With the start of school comes increased pedestrian and traffic volume. The Coffeyville Police Department would like to remind drivers to use extra caution while driving and be aware of school bus stops and children crossing the roadway.
The Coffeyville Police Department offers the following safety tips related to traffic around our schools;
- Follow all speed limits and parking laws. Park only in designated areas.
- Be patient and allow plenty of time to deal with traffic during the beginning and end of the school day.
- Pay attention, Do not use your phone or text while driving.
- Expect the unexpected. Students sometimes make mistakes when it comes to pedestrian and bicycle safety.
- Stop and look both ways before pulling out of parking lots and side streets.
The public should also be aware of increased police presence and traffic enforcement around schools. Fines are doubled for speeding within a school zone. And remember, NEVER pass a school bus stopped with lights activated.
Some violations which are regularly seen in the previous years were illegal parking (ie to close to the stop sign, in front of drive ways and in marked no parking area's) and illegal left hand turns into the pick-up lanes. Also, don't line up in the roadway while awaiting the children to be released. Circle the area until you can safely enter the pickup area. Otherwise this causes traffic congestion, and visual obstructions. Safety of the kids is a is a #1 priority for us and citations will most likely be issued if your caught violating any of the above. Let’s have a great 2019-2020 school year.
