CITY INTRODUCES RODRIGUEZ AS NEW FIRE CHIEF

The city is proud to announce the promotion of Michael M. Rodriguez, RN, BSN, MS, to the position of Fire Chief for Coconut Creek Fire Rescue. Chief Rodriguez has brought more than two decades of distinguished leadership experience in fire rescue, emergency medical services, and healthcare administration.

Chief Rodriguez has served as Deputy Fire Chief since September 2024, where he has overseen daily operations, guided strategic initiatives, and supported the continued growth and professionalism of the department. His career includes executive leadership roles with Seminole Tribe Fire Rescue as Division Chief of EMS and a 20-year career with Delray Beach Fire Rescue, where he held key positions including EMS Captain, Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety and Assistant Chief of Administration.

In addition to his fire service leadership, Chief Rodriguez has significant healthcare experience as an emergency room/trauma nurse and patient care manager, as well as a strong background in education as an EMS and nursing instructor. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in health sciences and nursing as well as a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership.

Chief Rodriguez is widely respected for his forward-thinking leadership, commitment to operational excellence, and dedication to developing the next generation of fire service professionals.
He has been married to his wife, Nadine, for over 26 years. They have two children: Gianni (25), a graduate of the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in information technology, and Mia (22), a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The City of Coconut Creek looks forward to Chief Rodriguez’s continued leadership and vision as he guides Coconut Creek Fire Rescue into the future.

It’s been a bittersweet day.

It’s a well earned retirement day for Chief Blizzard.

But it’s tough on us because we sure are gonna miss him.

He spent over 30 years in the fire service in St. Lucie County before joining us as one of our “founding fathers” when Coconut Creek Fire Rescue began in September of 2021 when he became an assistant fire chief.

He took over the helm in 2024, leading the agency to its first ambulance services accreditation.

We wish him well in all his future endeavors.

He’ll always have a seat at our table.

Chief Blizzard and Assistant Chief Chin were among those who talked to more than 60 folks about hurricane preps at last week's Public Safety Series presentation on how we handle the before, during, and aftermath of big storms. We've been lucky since 2017, which was the last time a named storm rolled through Coconut Creek (Hurricane Irma). But our number's gonna be up sooner or later. Many thanks to our friends and community partners at the Foundation for Independent Living for hosting our latest Friend Responders! This unique initiative helps us because it gives firefighters an opportunity to learn from those on the Autism Spectrum in a casual, friendly environment. It gives FIL participants a chance to practice their conversation skills and meet the men and women who respond to emergencies in their communities. Everybody wins!

Coconut Creek Fire Rescue is the first in South Florida to deploy a Butterfly BVM device. This unique breathing apparatus allows firefighters to work much more efficiently on patients that need to be ventilated after a serious health condition or injury. Division Chief Choat shows you what makes it so special in this report:

Firefighters are training this week on the Butterfly BVM. It’s a breathing assist device that can be calibrated to the age and size of a patient in distress. We’ll have one of these on every truck, making us the first agency in South Florida to do so.

Our new hires, along with several other firefighters, did the nearly 5 mile walk, in full gear, from Station 50 to Station 94 over the weekend. We're calling it our New Hire Commitment Walk and we'll be making it one of our traditions!
