Mangroves Fight Climate Change

🌎 Small Forests, Big Climate Impact

Did you know mangroves are among the most effective ecosystems for capturing and storing carbon? Scientists refer to this stored carbon as "blue carbon."

Mangroves can:
✅ Store up to 5 times more carbon per unit area than tropical rainforests
✅ Sequester carbon at rates up to 10 times greater than many terrestrial ecosystems

Much of this carbon is stored underground in mangrove soils, where it can remain for decades or even centuries.

🌱 Conserving mangroves helps support climate resilience.

🌊 Nature's Storm Shield

Mangroves serve as a natural first line of defense against coastal flooding, storm surge, and erosion. Their tangled root systems help slow water, reduce wave energy, and stabilize shorelines.

In Florida, mangroves reduced flood risk to nearby properties and helped protect more than 626,000 people from flooding during Hurricane Irma. They also prevented an estimated $1.5 billion in storm damage.

Healthy mangroves help create safer and more resilient coastal communities.

Learning in the Kitchen: Whole-Grain Pasta Salad

We had a great time cooking with our homeschool group while making a delicious whole-grain pasta salad! This hands-on class focused on two important kitchen skills: measuring and knife skills.

Cooking skills are an important part of healthy eating. One barrier to eating more nutritious foods can be a lack of confidence or experience in the kitchen. Learning how to measure ingredients, safely use a knife, prepare vegetables, and follow a recipe gives youth practical skills they can use to prepare meals for themselves and their families.

Using whole-grain pasta also provided an opportunity to discuss simple ingredient choices that can add more fiber and nutrients to a meal.

Learning to cook isn't just about making a recipe—it's about building confidence, independence, and skills for a lifetime of healthier choices.
