🚨 AIR QUALITY ALERT – CODE RED 🚨

**The Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department & EMS is urging all residents to take precautions as a Code Red Air Quality Alert has been issued for Maryland.**

Smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires has moved into our region, causing dangerous levels of fine particulate pollution. These microscopic particles can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, creating serious health risks—even for otherwise healthy individuals.

# # # What Does Code Red Mean?

A **Code Red Air Quality Alert** means the air is **unhealthy for everyone**. Spending extended time outdoors can increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular problems.

# # # You May Experience:

• Coughing or wheezing
• Shortness of breath
• Eye, nose, or throat irritation
• Headaches or dizziness
• Chest tightness or fatigue

Those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone working or exercising outdoors are at an even greater risk.

# # # How You Can Protect Yourself:

🏠 Limit time outdoors, especially this afternoon and evening.
🚪 Keep windows and doors closed.
❄️ Run your air conditioning on the recirculate setting if possible.
💨 Use a HEPA air purifier if available.
🏃 Postpone outdoor exercise, sports, and strenuous activities..
😷 If you must be outside for an extended period, consider wearing a properly fitted N95 or KN95 mask.

# # # Fire Department Safety Reminder

Our firefighters, EMS personnel, and first responders are trained and equipped to operate in challenging conditions, but we encourage our community to reduce unnecessary outdoor exposure until air quality improves.

If you or a family member develops severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or worsening asthma symptoms, seek medical care immediately or call 911 for emergencies.

Please continue to monitor local forecasts and air quality updates, check on elderly neighbors and those with chronic medical conditions, and take steps to protect yourself and your family.

**Your safety is our priority. Stay informed. Stay indoors when possible. Stay safe.**

This evening, Wednesday, July 15, we will be collecting water and Gatorade for Hydrate our Hero’s.
See you at Fishermans Field between 6-7 to drop off your donation.
If you don’t have time to get to the store, we are taking monetary donations either online (mycobbisland.org)or in person at the event.

Congratulations are in order!!

Attendance at two great events:
First event was Wednesday April 22, 2026:
LASMVFA (Ladies Auxiliary Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Association).

Cindy Pilkerton, recipient of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Renea Shymansky received her 50 Year pin and certificate.
Donna Osakowicz and Connie Bowling received 3rd place in the Fire Prevention category and this submission will be presented to the State to be judged and presented at Ocean City at the Fireman’s convention. Good Luck!!

Second Event:
Attendance to the Southern Maryland Firemen’s Convention held at Solomon’s Fire Department.
Our Very own Kathy Kilinski received her 50 years! A cherished accomplishment.

Michelle Lawman and Joellen Lawman representing The Fire Prevention committee for CIVFD, won 1st place in our category II for our area. They also won 2nd place for the Special Projects for their Fire Prevention Book.

A huge shout out to TJ Hayden and crew (our many cadets)
TJ Hayden, Cheryl Goldsmith, Jordan Swanstrum, JR Goldsmith, Andrew Bowling, Bill Goldsmith, Crystal Jackson, Teagan Goldsmith, Logan Friedrich, Emory Wright, Devin Gottchalk, Kenny Harvey, Kash Calvert, for the many hours of cleaning Ambulance 69, Eng 61, Tanker 6 and Brush 64.
Brush 64 won 2nd place.

Our Fire Prevention Ambassador Kayleigh Jackson won 1st place - Queen!

We truly want to thank all that Donated, worked tirelessly many hours, shopping, cleaning items and cleaning the station, putting great items together, setting up tables and chairs, taking down the tables and chairs, the organizing, the “fluffing”, dotting those “i’s” and crossing those “ t’s”, the cooking and the kitchen cleanup.

There is so much to do to put on an event, so much to do behind the scene. To make it all worthwhile for the Benefit of the Reason - Support towards Boat 6 and supplies to Boat 6.

We are a water community and you kinda need a boat. A boat that can carry out to an Emergency, to handle “that kind of water on THAT Emergency”.

Without your support it would be difficult to complete the mission. Sure, there are ways and means of funding, but if this amounts to helping and easing the function, we are glad we are tired the day after.

Thank you and we hope you enjoyed the great meal - it was a variety, the cake was scrumptious, and we hope you enjoy your new finds from the auction.

Many Hands Make a project go faster and smoother and not quite so tired the day after, so if you are looking to be Community Based, A need to support your Neighbor, Support in an Emergency, we are here for you. Our doors are always open for Firefighter’s, EMT’s and definitely Auxiliary members (yes, men are needed and welcomed).
Please stop by and check us out and perhaps you will leave a completed application.
