What better day to open a new park with miles of new trails than National Trails Day?
On Saturday, more than 100 residents, partner agency representatives, the full City Council, and staff from multiple departments gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of Soda Springs Ranch Open Space Preserve. Folks were treated to city swag, light refreshments, and miles and miles of new open space trails.
Mayor Wheeler provided opening remarks, followed by comments from Vice Mayor Lands, Councilmembers Morgenstern and Marquez, Public Works and Parks Superintendent Galvan, Ken Wells with the Redwood Trails Alliance, and Misti Arias with Sonoma County Ag + Open Space as the community celebrated Cloverdale’s newest outdoor destination.
The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon cutting marking the official opening of Soda Springs Ranch to the public. This 209-acre preserve features six miles of trails, rolling hills, oak woodlands, seasonal creeks, abundant wildlife, a redwood grove, and its namesake bubbling soda spring. The property was officially transferred to the City on September 25, 2023 and opened to the public on June 6, 2026.
Since acquiring the property, City staff have been deeply involved in every stage of the project, including land acquisition, CEQA compliance, park design and drawings, project management, community outreach meetings, vegetation management, prescribed burns, tree pruning, wood chipping, sheep grazing, road grading, ADA access improvements, driveway construction, trail and drainage work, and coordinating the Grand Opening. Their efforts reflect a shared commitment to stewardship, conservation, and expanding public access to the Cloverdale outdoors.
Opening the preserve on National Trails Day felt especially fitting. The annual celebration, held on the first Saturday in June, encourages people across the country to get outside and enjoy the trails and open spaces that connect our communities.
Soda Springs Ranch is now open daily from sunrise to sunset. Temporary trail maps are available at both entrance kiosks while the final map is being completed and will be posted on the city's website when it is received. A friendly park reminder: the preserve is open to foot traffic, leashed pups, and human-powered bicycles. Horses, electric bikes, and motorized vehicles must sit this one out. Parking is available at the preserve, including ADA-accessible spaces, with additional parking near City Park and Vintage Meadows Park.
Trail access is available at two locations:
• N. Foothill Blvd at West 2nd St, near City Park
• S. Foothill Blvd near Vintage Meadows Park
