We are so pleased by the support these projects received and can't wait to begin the planning process for implementing these much needed improvements to our Pine Valley Park and Ice Arenas. Recognizing the revenue gain from visitors to our community will help support local projects; that is exactly what we strive for when building regional draws to our community. Do you know that in 2012, residents of Cloquet passed a referendum for a 1/2 cent sales tax enabling the city to collect $16.5 million for parks and recreational investment and local road and utility projects? Through the collection of these funds, Cloquet has accomplished many projects that otherwise would have taken decades to achieve. In contrast, it would have taken a 24% tax increase that would have been in effect for 30 years to fund the same projects.

Of all the parks within the City of Cloquet, the vast natural area of Pine Valley Park is the crown jewel. Situated on top of unique geological features, Pine Valley is the largest of Cloquet’s parks, covering approximately 240 acres.

Pine Valley is maintained by the City of Cloquet Parks Department and has a multi-use trail system for cross country skiing during the winter season and hiking and trail running in summer and fall. The ski jumping facility has multiple jumps and hills with a rope tow. The singletrack trail provides opportunities for mountain biking, hiking and running during the summer and fall, plus snowshoeing, hiking, and fat-tire biking in the winter.

As part of the upcoming 1/2% sales tax vole, Pine Valley Park will see much needed improvements to trails, parking, the chalet, and the ski jumps.

Next Tuesday, Cloquet residents will be asked to vote yes or no on the 1/2-a-penny per dollar local option sales tax to raise $8M in project funds for the city of Cloquet.

The Minnesota Wilderness was founded by regional leaders several years ago to establish an area junior league team, to provide a hockey feeder program that develops and prepares players for Division 1 hockey. The Minnesota Wilderness is a part of the Midwest Division and calls the Northwoods Credit Union Arena home, located in Cloquet’s Pine Valley Park.

If approved, some monies from the upcoming 1/2% sales tax approval will be used to continue to provide a safe facility for local athletes, visiting teams, and spectators.
