SIGNIFICANT EVENT - FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT (VIENNA ROAD / DEXTER IN VIENNA TOWNSHIP)

On 05-17-26 (Sunday), at approximately 6:15PM, the CPD duty officer was clearing from a service request in the 400 blk. E. Vienna St. when he observed a motorcyclist riding westbound past the officer’s position at a high rate of speed.

The CPD officer pulled onto Vienna St., activating his lights and siren as he did so, but the motorcycle was already out of sight.

The duty officer drove westbound on Vienna St., the direction the motorcycle was last seen traveling, in an effort to regain sight of the motorcycle, and to advise Genesee County Central Dispatch of his observations.

Upon reaching line of sight with the expansion area of Vienna Road from two to four lanes, the duty officer witnessed an atmospheric disturbance in the area of Vienna Road / Dexter commonly occurring with motor vehicle accidents.

Upon closing distance and confirming a collision had occurred, the CPD duty officer advised dispatch the motorcycle struck the rear end of a vehicle that had been turning westbound onto Vienna Rd. At this time the duty officer exited his cruiser and began lifesaving efforts for the motorcycle operator, including CPR.

Within moments, first responders from GCSO and the Clio Area Fire Authority arrived on scene to take over lifesaving efforts, but the motorcycle operator was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

This Significant Event notification is offered to maintain transparency with CPD’s operations. As the accident, and all related investigative steps moving forward are in the jurisdiction of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, all future release of information will be incumbent on GCSO.

SIGNIFICANT EVENT- FELONY LARCENY @ FORMER CLIO ELEMENTARY

On 05-13-26 (Wednesday), at approximately 6:00 AM, work crews arrived at the former Clio Elementary at 300 Rogers Lodge to discover the work site had been burglarized, and several thousand dollars worth of construction materials had been stolen.

Surveillance cameras on school grounds, in conjunction with the city’s Flock Camera System, led to the identification of the vehicle involved, which, in turn led to the identification of two suspects.

Follow up investigation at an address in Mt. Morris Twp. led to the arrest of one adult male, and one adult female, as well as the recovery of several of the stolen items.

Both suspects were lodged in the Genesee County Jail pending issuance of warrants by the prosecutor’s office, and the case remains under investigation.

If you have information related to this case, please call CPD in relation to Complaint # 26-000102

We offer our sincere thanks to both the Mt. Morris Twp. and Mt. Morris City police departments for their timely assistance, and there is no ongoing threat to the public in relation to this case.

***UPDATE***

The City of Clio has listened to its residents, and in response, has opted to reopen the bathrooms on a tentative basis.

We are asking the public for help, though. If you see that someone has committed vandalism, please call 911 and make a report with the duty officer.

This is the only way we can narrow down timelines to help identify any party / parties responsible.

We thank you for your patience and understanding, and wish all a safe, enjoyable summer.

PSA - BATHROOM CLOSURES @ CLIO CITY PARK

I must regretfully inform you that as of today, the bathrooms located in the city park will remain closed except for during special events.

The past few years have seen an exponential increase in damage and destruction in the bathrooms that the city cannot afford to drain taxpayer dollars repairing.

We have had toilets deliberately clogged and flooded, towel dispensers damaged, and removed from the walls, and sinks broken, and pulled away from the walls to the point of flooding.

The bathrooms were opened for the first day of the season yesterday, and have already been subjected to this malicious activity.

It has become an untenable issue to deal with, and again, the city is being mindful of how tax dollars are spent.

We are truly sorry for the inconvenience this will cause families visiting the park, but we have no viable alternative.

SIGNIFICANT EVENT - STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERY @ VIENNA / NEW STREET

On 03-23-26 (Tuesday) at approximately 7:50 AM, the City of Clio’s Flock Camera system sent out an alert regarding a vehicle reported as stolen from the Saginaw area.

The vehicle in question was subsequently located driving northbound on New St. near Smith St.

With the aid of GCSO and the Mt. Morris Township Police Department, the vehicle was stopped in the parking lot of the Marathon Gas Station, and the female driver was arrested for UDAA (Unlawful Driving Away Automobile) and an outstanding traffic warrant.

Reports of a subject fleeing from the scene resulted when a female passenger, not subject to criminal charges, ran after her dog when it jumped out of the vehicle.

The vehicle was impounded, and the investigation was turned over to MSP, the agency that originated the report.

There is no active threat to the community as a result of this event.

PSA - SCAM CALLS / SPOOFED PHONE NUMBERS.

We were contacted by a concerned citizen who received a phone call from “The Clio Police Department” earlier today, with her caller ID displaying our office phone number.

Our concerned citizen was told by a “foreign sounding” officer she had a warrant for her arrest, and could only avoid going to jail by making a payment online.

THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN, WE ASSURE YOU.

Anyone claiming they have a warrant for your arrest, trying to intimidate you into paying it online, or over the phone, is a scam artist.

Please, do not allow yourself, or your loved ones to be deprived of your lifesavings by these unscrupulous individuals.

If you receive a concerning call like this, please call your local law enforcement agency for clarification if you have any doubts.

PSA - UPCOMING CHANGE TO TRAFFIC FLOW ON MILL ST. / SMITH ST. (REMOVAL OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL)

As you may have noticed, the traffic signal located at the intersection of Mill / Smith St. has transitioned to blinking this past week.

This is a temporary step taken in the process of removing the traffic signal altogether, which should occur in approximately one week.

With the removal of the traffic signal, a STOP sign will be placed on Smith St. for vehicles turning onto Mill from eastbound Smith.

This change is anticipated to greatly improve traffic flow in the area, but
we ask motorists to be mindful of their speed, as our goal is to enhance not only traffic flow, but traffic safety as well.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief W. Millstead
