A rare visitor has been drawing birders from all over the region to Spruce Run Recreation Area this week, the Brown B***y, a seabird rarely seen in Hunterdon County. Normally found along tropical and coastal waters, sightings this far inland are unusual and have created quite a buzz in the birding community.

Over the last two weeks, visitors have traveled from places like Wayne, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Teaneck for the chance to spot this unexpected guest. While there’s never a guarantee of seeing wildlife, the possibility of witnessing something truly rare and unforgettable is part of the excitement of birding.

Spruce Run continues to be a place where nature can surprise you when you least expect it!

Today, we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

As people gather in our parks, enjoy the trails, lakes, campgrounds, and open spaces, we're reminded that these places, and the freedom to enjoy them, were protected through the sacrifice of so many.

From all of us at Spruce Run, Voorhees & Hacklebarney, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day as we take time to reflect, remember, and appreciate those who never made it home. 🇺🇸

“Only YOU can prevent forest fires”… and apparently steal the hearts of everyone at the park today too 🐻🌲❤️

This little ranger showed up ready for duty in his Smokey Bear hat and quickly became the cutest junior forest protector we’ve seen all week. Between the deer, owl, and big smiles, we’d say he fit right in at the park!

Thanks for visiting us today, Ranger!

“Mom?
Mommmm?
Moooom where are you?!
Mom, I’m hungry.
Mom, look at this bug.
Mom, can I eat this leaf?
Mom, I got lost for 3 seconds and panicked.”

Some things are universal in nature...kids calling for mom every 14 seconds.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. Whether you’re raising kids, dogs, cats, or tiny woodland explorers. Thanks for always answering when someone yells “MOM!”. 💕

Looking for a Mother’s Day gift that actually means something? Skip the flowers that fade and give her something rooted in nature 🌿

Camper Jeffrey clearly understood the assignment and stocked up on all the best park finds:

• A classic Voorhees State Park hat
• A Spruce Run sticker and button
• A beautiful field guide to New Jersey shrubs and vines
• A local history book on Hacklebarney and Voorhees

And honestly… wouldn’t mom love this?

Whether she’s into hiking, gardening, local history, or just repping her favorite parks, we’ve got the perfect gift waiting. Thoughtful, local, and something she’ll actually use.

This Mother’s Day, stop by the office and give her a little piece of the park!

Meet Jeanne, Officer Somers and Officer Todaro, or as Jeanne lovingly calls them, her “earth angels.”

One year ago today, April 13, 2025, Jeanne experienced a medical emergency in the campgrounds at Spruce Run. In a moment that would change everything, Officer Todaro, alongside Officer Somers, sprang into action and performed CPR. Because of their quick response, skill, and unwavering commitment, Jeanne is here today.

The balloon Jeanne is holding carries a message that says it all, “Happy Birthday.” It was brought to her by Officer Todaro during her recovery, a heartfelt reminder of what he humbly calls her “new birthday.”

This photo captures more than a reunion, it captures compassion, courage, and the profound impact of public service. We are deeply grateful to our New Jersey State Park Police officers for their dedication, professionalism, and the care they show to every visitor, every day.

Thank you for being there when it matters most.

A huge THANK YOU to our incredible AmeriCorps volunteers who joined us at Spruce Run Recreation Area last weekend! 🌿💪

In just 3 hours, 7 dedicated volunteers alongside Spruce Run staff and NJWAP Ambassadors made a powerful impact clearing invasive plants along Van Syckles Road. Together, the team removed an estimated 40 13-gallon bags of invasive species, including Autumn Olive, Multiflora Rose, Mile-a-Minute, Barberry, Wineberry, and more!

On top of that, the group also collected litter, helping restore the beauty and health of this important habitat.

Your hard work makes a real difference. Thank you for your time, energy, and commitment to protecting our natural spaces! 💚
