Today, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time to honor those heroes and reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We owe a debt that can never truly be repaid to those who wore the uniform and gave everything for our nation. As we spend time with family and friends, let us also take a moment to remember the fallen and keep their loved ones in our thoughts. May we never forget their courage, service, and sacrifice.

Today marks the final day of the legislative session - Sine Die - when all legislative business must be completed by midnight.

I am here continuing to work as we head toward that deadline, and I remain focused on finishing strong on behalf of your families and our communities.

This session has had many long days and nights, but it is my honor to work for you each day at the Capitol. Reach out to me at any time, I am always available.

👏We welcomed Matthew and Tyler Medina in the House chamber earlier this afternoon to highlight the work of these these twin brothers from Killingworth. The siblings were here for their efforts to change a state law that prohibits new teen drivers from carrying passengers who are younger than 18 for the first six months of driving, even immediate family members.

This made it difficult for the siblings to practice driving, since they couldn't be in the car together.

And as so many parents know with having to get kids to games, and other events, that meant a parent had to take two separate cars whenever one twin was driving.

We were joined today by House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora who had a bill proposal on this very issue. The siblings had testified before the Transportation Committee, and while working with Senator Christine Cohen, co-chairman of the committee, were able to tweak the law through S.B. 413, which I’m glad to say passed through the Senate and advanced from the House yesterday.

As long as one sibling holds a learner's permit, this specific change allows 16- and 17-year-old learner's permit holders to drive with their sibling, as long as they are accompanied by, and under the instruction of, an adult who is at least 20 who has been licensed for at least four years.

Thank you to the Medinas for your efforts!

🐶Not every day at the Capitol includes four-legged visitors, but maybe it should!

I had the chance to meet some great puppies from the CT Humane Society during Puppy Day today. Safe to say they were the most popular group in the building.

Organizations like this play a vital role in caring for animals and helping them find permanent homes, so if you are thinking about adopting they are a great place to start. 🐾

👉This is coming up tomorrow for anyone who needs to dispose of unwanted, or unused prescription medication. The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a biannual event hosted nationwide so that residents have a free and convenient opportunity for the disposal of medicines from households.

The event is hosted by the DEA in partnership with local law enforcement agencies all across the country.

There are several locations for the event, which you can look up here:

Last night on the House floor, I shared a deeply personal story, one that I felt was important to the debate on hand.

The majority in the House passed a controversial proposal (HB 5350) eliminating potency and dosage limits on ma*****na products sold in Connecticut, and I opposed it. The reason is personal: my 26-year-old stepson died from an overdose just three years ago. His loss deeply impacted our family, and it’s a pain we feel each and every day.

During what was a lengthy debate, my colleagues and I offered several amendments, including one to keep potency limits in place. I spoke because ma*****na can be the starting point of a dangerous path, and addiction is taking lives, including someone in my own family.

At a time when families and communities are already struggling with substance abuse, raising potency levels sends the wrong message. Ma*****na is not harmless, and increasing its strength raises the risk of dependency and, in some cases, progression to more dangerous drugs. This bill was driven by concerns that Connecticut is losing business to states with higher potency levels, but we should be far more concerned about the lives at stake.

Public safety is also a serious concern. Higher potency products can further impair judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of impaired driving and putting more people in danger on our roads.

We should be working to make our communities safer, not expanding access to stronger, more dangerous substances, and I would urge my colleagues in the Senate to think about the impact this will have on so many families.

Today, House Republicans released our budget proposal and it delivers real results for our shoreline communities.

Our plan is balanced, provides more than $400 million in tax relief, comes in $167 million under the state spending cap, and spends less than the governor’s proposal, all while making smart, targeted investments where they’re needed.

✅That includes our STRAP plan, which would deliver approximately $1.1 million more in education funding to Clinton, Westbrook, and Killingworth. That’s meaningful support for our schools and real relief for local property taxpayers who have been carrying a heavy burden for too long.

For years, towns like ours have been asked to make up the difference because the state’s education funding formula hasn’t kept pace with reality. This proposal takes a fair, straightforward approach by distributing additional funding based on the same percentage towns already receive, so every community benefits.

Just as importantly, this funding is built into the budget, making it predictable and something our towns can actually plan around. And while delivering for our towns, we’re aiming to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits for our seniors, in addition to other tax relief.

This is about doing right by our students, supporting our towns, and easing the pressure on taxpayers, all while staying fiscally responsible and living within our means.

👉We can do better for our communities, and it can start this session. Check out our plan here: www.cthousegop.com/budget

Good accounting policy starts with transparency about the numbers.

That’s why I voted Thursday in support of HB 5039, which incorporates many of the items that I and my fellow House Republicans have been calling for to provide oversight to the legislative "earmark" process. As part of that, we introduced a set of practical reforms to ensure taxpayer dollars are tracked, reported, and used as intended.

And if you haven’t heard, the flow of money in Hartford has led to a federal investigation, which is why it was critical to address this issue.

This bill didn’t provide every item that we have been asking for, but it’s a step in the right direction.

The proposal:

◼Requires those earmarks be distributed in a manner that ensures they’re used for, and achieve, their intended purpose.

◼Prohibits state agencies from providing earmarks unless the recipient is specifically identified (legal name/DBA/address), and there’s a specific description of the intended purpose for which the funds will be used.

◼Recipients must get prior approval before transferring any funds to a subrecipient and subrecipients must provide the same information as the recipient.

These are straightforward, responsible steps that improve accountability and help restore public confidence in how state resources are managed. I supported the bill and look forward toward its passage.

A productive day at the Capitol strengthening our ties overseas and welcoming several honored guests. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

I had the opportunity to sit down with members of the UK Parliament, including MP Amanda Martin, MP Luke Akehurst and MP Oliver Ryan, as part of the CT-UK Friendship Caucus, which was established by the committee to promote and strengthen the longstanding economic and cultural ties between Connecticut and the United Kingdom.

We had a thoughtful roundtable on several issues, including a focus on the energy sector, trade, direct flights between Connecticut and the UK, and our respective industries on both sides of the Atlantic.

Connecticut has a lot to offer, including our manufacturers that supply products around the world, and as the committee's Ranking Member it’s important to continue to make those connections count. Thank you to David Clay, His Majesty’s Consul General to New England, for helping to arrange today's meeting - looking forward to future conversations!
