“Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened.” — Dwight D. Eisenhower

Eighty-two years ago today, on June 6, 1944, more than 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in the largest amphibious invasion in military history.

D-Day marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe and demonstrated extraordinary courage, unity, and sacrifice. These warriors left behind their homes, families, and comforts to confront tyranny abroad. Their service reminds us that freedom comes at a great cost.

Today, we honor their memory.

We reflect on their legacy.

And we remain steadfast in our duty to carry it forward. 🇺🇲

On this day, Feb. 23, 1945, United States Marines raised the U.S. flag on top of Mount Suribachi, on the island of Iwo Jima.

The battle for Iwo Jima would cost U.S. Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, and Airmen 27,071 casualties - the only battle where American casualties surpassed Japanese.

As the Stars and Stripes were raised atop Mt. Surbachi, battle still raged across the island. This same day, a young Marine Corporal, Hershel 'Woody' Williams, fought his way through enemy defenses, single-handedly clearing strongpoints and eliminating pillboxes - actions for which he would be awarded the Medal of Honor. One of 27 men to be awarded the Medal of Honor for valor on Iwo Jima, Williams was the last to survive - and would go on to become the last surviving recipient from the Second World War before passing in 2022.

From Toms River Times. Link in comments. 🇺🇸 A new sober living home for veterans is opening in Ocean County — and applications are about to begin.
Larry’s Home, operated by Just Believe Inc., is designed to help local veterans rebuild stability in a structured, substance-free environment.
