Robert Ludlum was born today in 1927. He only lived to be 73, but his creation, Jason Bourne, will live forever! After the initial trilogy, written by Ludlum, the character and his story were picked by Eric Van Lustbader and, later, Brian Freeman. Have you ever loved a book so much you want to listen to it again and again? If you’re a patron of the Macomb Library for the Blind and Print Disabled we can help! Just call us and tell us you want to keep a certain book. We’ll download it onto a cartridge here in our office and mail it to you. We do this frequently with the King James Bible. The Old Testament alone is over 60 hours; add it the much shorter New Testament and the total is 79 hours. Besides being so long, many of our patrons want to keep this book and refer back to it frequently. If you feel that way about any book available through the National Library Service call us at 586-286-1580.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! If you like celebrating heritage months with books, try a Japanese cozy. These gentle, thought-provoking tales encourage introspection, with minimal plots and slower pacing than American fiction. Known in Japanese as iyashikei, which roughly translates as healing, they can feel restorative after heavier reads like dystopias or thrillers. These books are often set in quiet places—coffee shops, bookstores, and libraries—and may include light magical realism, such as time travel or talking cats. A popular example is Before the Coffee Gets Cold (DB 102743), where café customers can visit the past but must follow strict rules, including returning before their coffee gets cold. It’s also available in Braille and Large Print. Call 586-286-1580 for help accessing this or other titles!

Did you know patrons of the Macomb Library for the Blind & Print Disabled have access to three different types of machines to play audiobooks? Most people start off with our most basic machine, the DS1 (Digital Standard). It has the fewest buttons and is the easiest machine to learn to use.

If you enjoy periodicals or listening to the Bible you may benefit from a DA1 (Digital Advanced.) This machine has an extra feature that makes moving between articles or chapters easier. If you’re a techie type and you use BARD and also listen to books on cartridge you may want to try the DA2. You can search BARD, download and play books on this machine. It does have a bit of a learning curve and wifi is required for use with BARD.

Call us at 586-286-1580 if you’re interested in trying one of these more advanced machines. You can keep your standard machine while you’re trying a new machine and decide which you prefer!

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, and the entire month of April is recognized as Earth Month. Earth Day began in 1970 as a way to highlight efforts to protect the environment. One of the organizations that helped make the first Earth Day a success was the United Auto Workers. Its president at the time, Walter Reuther, donated $2,000 to support the effort. Almost 60 years later, this American observance has grown into a global movement, with activities such as cleanups and tree planting taking place in communities around the world. The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled offers many books on environmental topics, ranging from scholarly works to practical guides like How Can I Help: Saving Nature with Your Yard (DB 128677).

On this day in 1964, Sidney Poitier became the first Black performer to win an Oscar for Best Actor. Mr. Poitier lived a fascinating life and wrote two memoirs. The first, This Life (DB 63615), was published in 1980. It’s a straight-forward, chronological look at the actor’s life. In 2000, Poitier published The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography (DB 50313). This work covers some of the same material as the earlier book but, as the title suggests, also delves more deeply into the actor’s beliefs, values and the life lessons he learned. Poitier narrates this book, which earned the Grammy for best audiobook in 2000. Also available in Large Print. Please call us at 586-286-1580 if you’d like help accessing these books or others.

April is National Poetry Month! The National Library Service has books on understanding poetry, as well as many collections of poetry from major poets, including most of the recent Poet Laureates. One good place to start is The Poet’s Corner: The One-and-Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family (DB 78553), compiled by actor John Lithgow. This collection, narrated by Lithgow and Susan Sarandon, contains many classic and well-known poems, including “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by William Butler Yeats and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s beautiful sonnet “How do I Love Thee.” For assistance accessing this book and others call us at 586-286-1580.

The 2026 Audie Award winners have been announced! Every year audiobooks are nominated for special recognition in various categories. This year’s winner in the Fiction category is Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid (DB 129909.) No surprise that the always excellent Julia Whelan is the primary narrator! If you listened to Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone (DB 90090) you’ve heard Ms. Whelan’s voice. She also narrated Hannah’s books The Four Winds (DB 102287) and The Women (118896), as well as many by other authors. Call us at 586-286-1580 to order these books or others!
