Northwest Fire Responds to Regional Wildfire in Laclede County

Northwest Fire Protection District Brush 1, staffed with three personnel, has responded as part of a regional strike team from the Lake area to assist Sleeper/Stoutland Fire with a large natural cover fire along Interstate 44 in Laclede County. Incident Command is reporting a rapidly growing fire, with structures already involved and several additional structures threatened. Firefighters from multiple agencies are working to contain the fire, protect threatened properties, and support ongoing suppression operations. Northwest Fire is proud to assist our neighboring departments during this significant incident. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Northwest Fire Protection District Supports Missouri State Fair Fire Department. The Northwest Fire Protection District is proud to announce its participation in the 2026 Missouri State Fair and its support of the Missouri State Fair Fire Department (MSFFD).

This year, the Northwest Fire Protection District has provided a brush truck and several department personnel who are serving alongside firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and emergency responders from fire departments across the state. Northwest personnel will assist with fire suppression, emergency medical response, and other public-safety needs throughout the fair.

The Missouri State Fair Fire Department is a unique operation organized through the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri (FFAM). Each year, fire service personnel and equipment from departments throughout Missouri come together to establish a fully operational fire and emergency medical department specifically for the duration of the State Fair. The MSFFD traces its beginnings to 1962, when it was established as a fire-safety education effort at the fair. As the fair continued to grow, so did the department’s responsibilities. Today, the MSFFD provides comprehensive fire and emergency medical services throughout the fairgrounds. The department is recognized as the only fully operational fire department in the United States that operates for only 11 days each year. During the fair, approximately 95 personnel provide 24-hour coverage, delivering fire suppression and advanced life support emergency medical services. The operation is made possible through the tremendous cooperation of Missouri’s fire service community. Departments from across the state contribute apparatus, equipment, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and support personnel to staff the department and provide continuous coverage.

The Northwest Fire Protection District is honored to be part of this statewide effort. Providing personnel and apparatus to the MSFFD allows our department to work alongside other Missouri fire service agencies, strengthen professional relationships, share experience, and contribute to the safety of the hundreds of thousands of people who attend the Missouri State Fair. The Northwest Fire Protection District would like to thank the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri, the Missouri State Fair Fire Department, the Missouri State Fair, and the many fire departments and emergency responders who dedicate their time and resources to making this unique operation possible.

The Northwest Fire Protection District is proud to serve our community and proud to support the Missouri fire service.

Training Never Stops.

Tonight, members of the Northwest Fire Protection District participated in a Swiftwater/Flood Rescue Awareness course presented by the National Rescue Responder Institute.

If you remember, just last month our firefighters responded to a swiftwater rescue in the Fiery Fork Conservation Area, where two people and their dog became trapped in fast-moving floodwaters. Thanks to the training, teamwork, and professionalism of everyone involved, all three were safely rescued. Incidents like that serve as a reminder that swiftwater emergencies can happen here at any time and reinforce why continuing education and preparedness are so important.

While our district is no stranger to water-related emergencies, understanding the dangers associated with moving water is critical to keeping both our responders and the public safe. Floodwaters are extremely unpredictable even a small amount of fast-moving water can overpower people and vehicles in seconds. This awareness training helps our firefighters recognize the hazards, understand proper response procedures, identify when specialized resources are needed, and make sound decisions that protect lives without creating additional victims. Our volunteers continue to dedicate countless hours outside of their regular jobs and family commitments to improve their knowledge and skills. Ongoing training like this ensures our firefighters are prepared to respond safely, effectively, and professionally when our community needs them most.

Every hour spent training today makes a difference when lives are on the line tomorrow. We remain committed to providing the highest level of service possible through continued education, preparation, and teamwork.

Northwest Fire Protection District Responds to July 4 Storms

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, severe thunderstorms swept through the Lake area, bringing damaging winds reported at up to 80 mph in some locations. The communities of Climax Springs, Edwards, and Roach experienced widespread storm damage, including numerous downed trees, power lines, utility poles, and damaged electrical infrastructure. The Northwest Fire Protection District responded to 29 emergency calls across our 186-square-mile response area. Despite multiple incidents occurring simultaneously, our firefighters responded quickly and professionally to every call for service, ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors.

Among the most significant incidents were responses to two separate areas where 6–8 utility poles were snapped and on the ground, along with several transformers that had been torn from the poles and were lying on the ground. These incidents created significant electrical hazards that required close coordination between firefighters and utility crews to ensure the safety of the public. As the storm response was winding down, Northwest firefighters were dispatched to a residence where a portable generator was being used to provide power to the home without adequate ventilation. The generator produced dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO), resulting in a mass exposure incident. Firefighters immediately evacuated the residence, assessed the occupants, and worked alongside EMS partners to provide emergency medical care. Twelve patients were evaluated and transported to area hospitals for further treatment. This incident serves as an important reminder that generators should never be operated inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or near windows and doors, as carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can quickly become deadly.

In addition to handling emergencies within our own district, the Northwest Fire Protection District deployed a brush truck with two firefighters to assist the Sunrise Beach area, which was also heavily impacted by the storm. We are proud to support our neighboring agencies whenever assistance is needed. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Southwest Electric for their prompt, professional, and coordinated response in restoring power and addressing hazardous electrical conditions throughout the storm. Their dedication and teamwork were instrumental in helping make the affected areas safe. Most importantly, we want to recognize our dedicated volunteer firefighters. Many left family gatherings and Independence Day celebrations without hesitation to answer the call for their community. Their willingness to serve, professionalism under pressure, and commitment to protecting others exemplify the very best of the fire service. We are incredibly proud of each member who answered the call during this challenging day.

The Northwest Fire Protection District remains committed to serving our community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and appreciates the continued support of the citizens we are honored to protect.
