Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) is providing an update to customers currently affected by the precautionary boil water advisory issued following repairs to the transmission main system in Clifton.

PVWC has completed the necessary system restoration work and has received approval from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for its water quality sampling plan.

Water quality sampling is currently underway at designated locations throughout the advisory area. Samples are being collected and analyzed in accordance with NJDEP requirements to verify that water quality meets all state and federal drinking water standards.

Based on progress to date, PVWC expects to receive laboratory results and is hopeful that the precautionary boil water advisory can be lifted by late tomorrow afternoon or early evening, provided all sample results are negative and confirm that the water is safe for consumption.

If any sample results indicate the presence of contamination, additional corrective actions, including targeted flushing and follow-up sampling, may be required before the advisory can be lifted.

The precautionary boil water advisory remains in effect until all required laboratory results have been reviewed and approved. Customers within the affected area should continue to boil water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, preparing infant formula, and washing fruits and vegetables. Laundry can be washed as usual during the advisory.

PVWC's operations and water quality teams will continue working closely with NJDEP throughout the testing process to ensure all regulatory requirements are met and that public health remains protected.

Customers will be notified immediately when the precautionary boil water advisory is lifted.

🚨 BOIL WATER ADVISORY EXPANDED 🚨

Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) has expanded the precautionary boil water advisory for customers in Clifton and Passaic as crews continue emergency repairs on a major transmission main on Chittenden Road.

To complete the next phase of repairs, PVWC will temporarily shut down the 51-inch transmission main beginning at approximately 10:00 p.m. tonight through approximately 5:00 a.m. Thursday, although the timeline may vary based on field conditions.

As a result, the advisory area has been expanded and now affects approximately 25,000 to 30,000 customers.

⚠️ Customers in the affected area should boil water for at least one minute before using it for:
β€’ Drinking
β€’ Cooking and food preparation
β€’ Making ice
β€’ Brushing teeth
β€’ Washing dishes
β€’ Preparing infant formula
β€’ Washing fruits and vegetables

Bottled water may also be used until the advisory is lifted.

While there is currently no evidence of contamination, pressure losses during repair work can increase the risk of contaminants entering the water system. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with NJDEP requirements.

πŸ’§ During the overnight shutdown, some customers may experience:
β€’ Lower-than-normal water pressure
β€’ Temporary pressure fluctuations
β€’ Possible temporary service interruptions

The advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed, system pressure is fully restored, and laboratory testing confirms the water is safe to drink.

🚨 PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ADVISORY IN EFFECT 🚨

Due to ongoing repairs on a 42-inch water main connected to a 51-inch transmission main on Chittenden Road in Clifton, Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 5,000 customers in Clifton and 200 customers in Passaic.

The advisory is effective immediately and will remain in place until water quality testing confirms the water is safe to drink.

πŸ“ Customers within the affected area shown on the map should follow the advisory until further notice.

What You Need to Do

Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for:
βœ” Drinking
βœ” Cooking and food preparation
βœ” Making ice
βœ” Brushing teeth
βœ” Washing dishes
βœ” Preparing infant formula
βœ” Washing fruits and vegetables

πŸ’§ Bottled water may also be used for these purposes until the advisory is lifted.

Why Is This Advisory Being Issued?

As repairs continue, pressure fluctuations in the water system may occur. While there is no evidence of contamination, changes in water pressure can increase the risk of contaminants entering the distribution system. As a precaution, customers in the affected area are advised to boil water until testing confirms water quality meets all state and federal standards.

What PVWC Is Doing

Our crews are working around the clock to complete repairs and restore normal system operations. Once repairs are complete and pressure is fully restored, comprehensive water quality testing will be conducted throughout the affected area.

The advisory will remain in effect until:
βœ… Water system pressure is fully restored
βœ… Laboratory testing confirms the water is safe to consume

Customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted.
