Water break on Willard Dr Clifton Park. Crew on site

02/19/2026

Update to the odor in the water.

Testing shows all levels are within limits and the water is safe.

Last week we completed maintenance on the water plant and raw water wells prior to the water plant. Specific valves within the system were also maintained. All of this work would have caused reverse flows in the mains and would stir up the water. Along with the quick deep freeze as this slows the ability to precipitate the iron out of the water, can be causes of the odor concerns.

Current reports are of the odor specifically from hot/warm water. This is due to the hot water tanks needing time to turn over and get fresh water into it. Heating the water changes the chemistry of the water and can cause different odors, tastes and other aesthetic concerns.

If returning from vacation, understand that the water has been heated and sitting in the hot water tank the entire time you were away. If you observe a taste or odor issue you will want to flush the hot water to renew the water in the tank. This can be done by simply using the water for a period of time.

Thank you for your patience,
CPWA

There have been a few reports of an earthy/musty odor and taste of the water. This is due to mineral shifts in the water. As the temperature of the air and water drop natural minerals within the water can shift and cause different aesthetics of the water including taste, odor, color, cloudiness, etc. With the recent change in temperatures the minerals of iron and manganese have caused the observed metallic or earthy taste and odor.

CPWA is monitoring the concern and can verify that we are reading appropriate chlorine residuals (verifying disinfected water) and all minerals are within state regulated requirements. This means the water is safe to drink.

Please know that we are taking daily readings for verification of water quality. Any concerns will be posted to our website, social media and media outlets.
