Ohio Legal Aid staff & board members are visiting Capitol Hill, sharing the impact of civil legal aid & discussing how the proposed reductions to Legal Services Corporation funding could hurt families and communities.

Thank you to JT Carpenter in the office of Congressman Max Miller for meeting with us today. Last year, Legal Aid served 1,188 households in Ohio's 7th District, including 1,312 children, 207 survivors of domestic violence, 52 veterans, 396 people with disabilities, and 248 older adults.

Thank you to Max West in the office of Rep. Dave Joyce for meeting with us today. Last year, Legal Aid organizations served 3,683 households in Ohio's 14th District, including 1,922 children, 275 survivors of domestic violence, 132 veterans, 744 people with disabilities, and 514 older adults.

With legal assistance, these individuals were able to resolve issues of housing, safety, income security, and other critical civil legal matters. We are glad to share the experiences of the people we serve and highlight the important role civil legal aid plays in strengthening families, communities, and economic stability throughout Ohio.

Unlike criminal court, there is no constitutional right to an attorney in civil cases. That means you could lose your home, your income, or your children without any legal support. Funding the Legal Services Corporation ensures Americans who can’t afford a lawyer receive critical civil legal support.

Attorneys - Join us for a virtual training focused on “Source of Income” (SOI) protections for renters who rely on Housing Choice Vouchers and other lawful forms of non-wage income to secure housing.

In Ohio, source of income is not currently protected under state fair housing law, leaving renters subject to a patchwork of local ordinances that vary by jurisdiction. The discussion will examine how this uneven legal landscape impacts housing access across the state.
