Such wise words of food science and foraging wisdom were shared tonight on the Maltz Performing Arts Center stage!

Alexis Nikole Nelson, BlackForager, had the venue's sold-out crowd cheering and laughing from the moment she stepped out, starting early on with gems like “if you show up at a party with rose water baklava and say ‘I made this rose water,’ people will be impressed with you.” And ending with a reflection on how foraging is not only fun, it brings people together. Her advice?

“Find your wild food community and make some good food together.”

Meet Stephanie!

She's 's new Writing Specialist at the William N. Skirball Writers’ Center located in our South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch.

Stephanie holds an MFA in creative writing from Ashland University, where she worked under the tutelage of Garrard Conley and Terese Marie Mailhot, among others. She has experience on both sides of literary journals. She was the lead creative nonfiction editor for The Black Fork Review in 2020, and she has appeared in or has forthcoming pieces in F(r)iction, Reed Magazine, Watershed Review and other publications.

❓What is your goal as the new Writing Specialist at the Library?
🙂To make a safe space for everyone, whatever stage you are in your writing journey. I want to make more writing groups that aren’t just geared toward genres but more toward your walk of life (e.g., LGBTQ+, women over 60 and writers with disabilities). Plus, I’m hoping to include more youth writing programs in the center as well.

❓What is the coolest thing about the William N. Skirball Writers’ Center?
😁That it’s probably the last actual quiet place in the library. I’m normally the loudest person in there.

❓What are you reading right now?
📚I’m always reading multiple books at once:
--"Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction" by David Sheff
--"Vigil" by George Saunders
--"The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison
… and a million picture books to my kids

❓What is your favorite book about writing?
✨The Situation and the Story: The Art of Personal Narrative by Vivian Gornick
