Happy Juneteenth from the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cuyahoga County!

First flown in 2000, the Juneteenth flag pictured here commemorates the Juneteenth holiday and was designed by Ben Haith to mark the General Order No. 3 issued in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Though President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the document did not grant freedom to slaves held in border states. Union Troops entered Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, forcing the emancipation of the last remaining slaves in the country. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

Telephone Hotline Spotlight: Can You Grow Oranges in Northeast Ohio?

*Free Service - call Hotline now with your garden questions: 216-429-8200 ext 1”.

Yes, you can! While it may not be the orange you're thinking of, we can grow Citrus trifoliata or hardy orange. The plant's thorns make it a great choice for a hedge. The root stock is used for less hardy sweet oranges. When ripe, the oranges are small and bitter and make wonderful marmalade.

Have gardening questions? Contact the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cuyahoga County Hotline April through September! Call 216.429.8200, x 1, leave a message - including your name, number, and question - and an MGV will return your call within two business days.

Learn with MGVs: Rust Belt Riders / Tilth Soil Visit

*MGVs & the Public Are Welcome

So you've probably seen the Rust Belt Rider trucks around the CLE and seen their drop-off bins popping up in parking lots, too. Learn what Rust Belt Riders are all about at this upcoming presentation.

This two-hour visit and presentation will cover both the socio-ecological and the horticultural-agricultural considerations of scaling organics diversion in Northeast Ohio and beyond. We will see and experience all phases of collecting and producing the varieties of soil products conducted by this well-known organization, which is a small worker-owned company. In 2014, this company developed a mission to create wealth from waste to feed people, not landfills.

Where: Rathlin Soils, 7450 Terminal Drive, Lorain, OH 44053
When: Fri, June 26, 2026 - 11:00 AM
