Honored to attend the Consular Corps of Michigan reception hosted by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) at the Governor’s Residence in Lansing earlier this month! 🇺🇸🤝🇸🇮

It was a wonderful evening celebrating Michigan’s strong diplomatic, cultural, and economic connections with international partners. Beyond the opportunity to connect with Governor Whitmer and fellow members of the diplomatic community, it was especially meaningful to catch up with Slovenian Honorary Consul Ambassador Yusuf Ghafari.

Michigan and Slovenia share a rich and enduring history that dates back to the 19th century. From the legacy of Bishop Frederic Baraga to communities bearing Slovenian names, the ties between our people have left a lasting imprint on Michigan’s cultural landscape. Today, those historic connections continue to grow through dynamic partnerships in trade, investment, innovation, and cultural exchange.

A few notable examples of Slovenia’s historical footprint in Michigan:

📍 Traunik – This community in Alger County was settled by Slovenian lumber workers in the early 1900s. In 1910, local storekeeper and postmaster Louis Mikulich renamed the town from Buckeye Landing to Traunik—the Slovenian word for “meadow”—in honor of his heritage.

📍 Baraga – Situated on the shores of Keweenaw Bay on Lake Superior, the village and county of Baraga are named after Bishop Frederic Baraga, the Slovenian missionary who established a mission there in 1843 and became one of the most influential figures in the region’s early history.

As we celebrate these shared roots, we also look ahead to strengthening the partnerships that connect Michigan and Slovenia for generations to come.

Following extensive conservation and restoration work, Gregor Perušek’s paintings have now taken their place on the walls of Moderna galerija in Ljubljana.

Having lived and worked in the USA for many years, a significant portion of the exhibited works traveled to Ljubljana from the Slovenian National Home , bringing an important chapter of Perušek’s artistic legacy back to Slovenia.

Slovenia's National Day Celebration in Cleveland

Last week, we celebrated the 35th Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia at the magnificent Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra. The event also highlighted the Orchestra's upcoming historic performance in Ljubljana on October 18, which will mark its first-ever appearance in Slovenia.

The celebration was dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Slovenia's independence and the enduring friendship between Slovenia and the United States. We also paid tribute to the extraordinary role of Cleveland's Slovenian community, one of the most important centers of Slovenian heritage outside Slovenia. We thank the Slovenian community for decades of dedication to preserving the Slovenian language, culture, and identity, and our American friends for their steadfast partnership and support.

Special thanks to the representatives of the City of Cleveland, the State of Ohio, and the Ohio Senate for their proclamations, support, and recognition of Slovenia's achievements and the contributions of the Slovenian-American community. We are pleased that cooperation between Slovenia and the United States continues to expand in the fields of business, science, innovation, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and culture. As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary through the America250 initiative, we particularly value the strong partnership between our countries, while people-to-people ties remain the foundation of our cooperation. We deeply value the support of the America250-Ohio to our projects.

The evening opened with performances of the national anthems by Cleveland Orchestra violinists, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the Slovenian choir **Fantje na vasi**, whose renditions of *Triglav moj dom* and *Slovenec sem* honored our shared heritage.

Our heartfelt thanks to all guests, partners, supporters, and friends of Slovenia who continue to help build bridges between our two countries.

Consul General Češarek attended the 30th Anniversary Sister Cities Flag Raising Ceremony celebrating the longstanding partnership between City of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Mestna občina Murska Sobota, Slovenia, together with the Mayor of Murska Sobota, Damjan Anzelj.

More than a formal partnership, this sister-city relationship is a testament to the enduring bonds created by generations of Prekmurje immigrants who carried their Slovenian heritage across the Atlantic and kept their language, culture, and traditions alive.

The event honored the individuals and communities who continue to strengthen the friendship between Slovenia and the United States and preserve Slovenia’s rich heritage in Bethlehem.
